Spatio-temporal variation of near-surface soil water content in China from 1988 to 2016

Kaihua Liao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the changes in soil water content (SWC) in different regions of China using near-surface SWC data. The findings showed that South and Central China had higher SWC, while Northeast China exhibited a significant decreasing trend and Northwest China and Qing-Tibet showed significant increasing trends. The monthly SWC data in all divisions indicated a main period scale, with the next 5-6 years predicted to be wet years.

Spatial patterns in the C:N:P stoichiometry in Qinghai spruce and the soil across the Qilian Mountains, China

Jianguo Liu et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the Qilian Mountains revealed distinct patterns of soil and plant tissue stoichiometry in Qinghai spruce forests, with soil properties playing a larger role in determining plant tissue N:P ratios than climate factors. This highlights the importance of understanding the nutrient traits in forest ecosystems for future cultivation and management in arid regions.

Evaluation of ERA5 precipitation over the eastern periphery of the Tibetan plateau from the perspective of regional rainfall events

Xuelin Hu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of ERA5 reanalysis data in revealing regional rainfall events in the eastern periphery of the Tibetan Plateau and found that it captured general spatiotemporal features accurately but with noticeable biases. ERA5 precipitation generally showed higher rainfall frequency and weaker intensity, starting earlier and ending later compared to gauge data. The spatial distribution of precipitation intensity in ERA5 was weaker and more uniform, with larger spatial ranges than gauge records, indicating problems in the current model system.

Xuehui Pi et al.

Summary: This study provided a comprehensive investigation of temporal-spatial variations in Chl-a concentrations in 82 lakes across the Tibetan Plateau region. The results revealed that lakes with high Chl-a concentrations were mainly concentrated in the eastern, southern, and northeastern parts of the Tibetan Plateau.

Performance of ERA5 reanalysis precipitation products in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao greater Bay Area, China

Ying Xin et al.

Summary: This study evaluates and compares the ability of ERA5-Land and ERA5-HRES products in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The results show that ERA5 products generally characterize moderate-intensity rain, with better performance in the southern coastal plains during the wet season and in the northern mountainous vegetation areas during the dry season, but face challenges in modeling precipitation in highly urbanized areas.

Suprapermafrost groundwater flow and exchange around a thermokarst lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China

Zeyong Gao et al.

Summary: The dynamics of suprapermafrost groundwater play a crucial role in regulating hydrological processes in Arctic, boreal, and high-altitude regions. However, there have been limited studies focusing on these dynamics on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). This study observed soil hydraulic conductivities, saturated thicknesses, and related hydrological processes around a typical thermokarst lake on the QTP, revealing fluctuations in water table depths and contributions to lake water by suprapermafrost groundwater.

Summary: The evaluation of nine precipitation products in alpine regions found that CMFD had the best overall performance, followed by GPCC and TRMM 3B43. All products showed obvious precipitation gradients, with GPCC exhibiting the greatest similarity to observations, followed by JRA-55 and CAPD.

Spatiotemporal drought monitoring using bottom-up precipitation dataset (SM2RAIN-ASCAT) over different regions of Iran

Sakine Koohi et al.

Summary: Drought, a significant natural phenomenon affecting water resources studies, agriculture, and environmental societies globally, is monitored in diverse climate regions of Iran using a newly developed precipitation dataset. The study shows that the SM2RAIN-ASCAT product performs well in detecting rainy days in extra-arid regions but tends to overestimate precipitation in these areas, while underestimating in humid and per-humid climates. Results also demonstrate good agreement between SM2RAIN-ASCAT and ground-based observations for monitoring drought at different time scales.
