Micro/nano-plastics cause neurobehavioral toxicity in discus fish (Symphysodon aequifasciatus): Insight from brain-gut-microbiota axis

Jun-Nan Huang et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have investigated the neurobehavioral toxicity of microplastics, and this study reveals a novel mechanism by which microplastics may cause behavioral toxicities via the brain-gut-microbiota axis. Results showed that exposure to different types and concentrations of microplastics had varying effects on the growth, swimming, and predatory performance of juvenile discus fish, as well as on neurotransmitter concentrations in the brain and gut. Additionally, the study found changes in gut microbiota richness and composition, as well as alterations in gene expression related to neural activities and enrichment of specific neuroactive pathways in both types of microplastics.

Reproductive toxicity of polystyrene microplastics: In vivo experimental study on testicular toxicity in mice

Baolian Hou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of microplastics on spermatogenesis in mice, showing a significant reduction in sperm count and an increase in deformity rate. Exposure to microplastics caused atrophy, shedding, and apoptosis of sperm cells in the testis, and disrupted the balance of Nrf2/HO-1/NF-κB pathway, leading to abnormal sperm quality in ICR mice.

Polystyrene microplastics induced male reproductive toxicity in mice

Haibo Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on male reproductive systems in mice. The results showed that PS-MPs accumulated in the testis, entered testicular cells, and led to decreased sperm quality and testosterone levels. Additionally, PS-MPs induced testicular inflammation and disruption of the blood-testis barrier, demonstrating the potential reproductive dysfunctions caused by microplastics.

Polystyrene microplastics disrupt the blood-testis barrier integrity through ROS-Mediated imbalance of mTORC1 and mTORC2

Yuexin Wei et al.

Summary: Exposure to polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) has been found to decrease sperm quality and quantity in male Balb/c mice. This is likely due to the disruption of blood-testis barrier (BTB) integrity, induced by PS-MPs causing cytoskeleton disorganization and imbalanced mTORC1 and mTORC2 activities via increased ROS levels.

Summary: The study demonstrates that microbiome modulates neuronal activity in specific brain regions of male mice to regulate stress responses and social behaviors. Social deviations in germ-free or antibiotic-treated mice are associated with elevated corticosterone levels, primarily produced by activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

The global threat from plastic pollution

Matthew MacLeo et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution that accumulates and is poorly reversible in the environment can have significant negative impacts such as changes to ecosystems, biological effects, and societal impacts. Therefore, a global response is needed to rapidly reduce plastic emissions through reductions in consumption of virgin plastic materials and internationally coordinated waste management strategies.

Regulation of Neurotransmitters by the Gut Microbiota and Effects on Cognition in Neurological Disorders

Yijing Chen et al.

Summary: Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota plays a crucial role in regulating brain activity and cognitive functions through the microbiota-gut-brain axis. The mechanisms by which gut microbiota regulate neurotransmitter production, transportation, and functioning are not well understood, nor are the effects of these interactions on normal brain functions and cognition. Dysbiosis of the microbiome can adversely affect cognitive function, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
