Identifying and Managing Aqueous Film-Forming Foam-Derived Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in the Environment

Andrea Leeson et al.

Summary: The use of AFFF has led to the widespread presence of PFAS in the environment, posing potential risks to ecosystems. Research efforts focus on measuring, characterizing, and treating PFAS, as well as developing PFAS-free fire suppression materials.

Spatial and Temporal Trends of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Global Ocean and Coastal Waters

Derek Muir et al.

Summary: PFAS, specifically PFCAs and PFSAs, have been widely detected in global surface waters since the early 2000s. The majority of measurements come from coastal seas in Western Europe, China, Korea, and Japan, with highest median concentrations reported in China's Bohai and Yellow Seas region as well as Europe's North and Baltic seas. Significant declines in median PFSAs and C7-C12 PFCAs were observed in the period 2012-2018 in these regions, and for 2004-2017 in the Great Lakes. Mass discharge estimates indicate continued substantial riverine emissions of long chain PFCAs in the coastal seas of China and reductions in emissions for Western European rivers compared to earlier time periods.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in Australian biosolids

Damien Moodie et al.

Summary: Biosolids samples from 19 Australian WWTPs were analyzed for 44 PFAS, with di-substituted phosphate esters being the dominant compound class contributing 45% of total PFAS mass. Higher PFAS concentrations were observed in urban locations, and there was a weak correlation between PFAS mass and percentage industrial waste contribution in WWTPs.

Priority perfluoroalkyl substances in surface waters - A snapshot survey from 22 developing countries

Abeer Baabish et al.

Summary: The Stockholm Convention has established a global monitoring plan to generate comparable data on the presence of POPs and PFAS in surface water samples from 22 countries. Variations in PFAS concentrations were found among different regions, with PFOA concentration in the Asia Pacific region showing statistically significant differences compared to Africa and GRULAC. These data may serve as a baseline for future monitoring activities and trend assessments.

Occurrence of perfluorinated carboxylic acids in Mexico City's wastewater: A monitoring study in the sewerage and a mega wastewater treatment plant

Mario Rodriguez-Varela et al.

Summary: An analytical method based on liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry was validated to quantify five perfluorinated carboxylic acids in wastewater produced in a megacity. Short-chain PFCA were abundant, while concentrations of PFOA and PFUnA remained lower in both sampling sites. The study found that furtive discharges of municipal and industrial wastewater increased the levels of short-chain PFCA, while those of PFOA and PFUnA were depleted.

A review of the occurrence, transformation, and removal of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater treatment plants

Swadhina Priyadarshini Lenka et al.

Summary: PFAS are widely used in consumer and industrial applications worldwide, with monitoring studies in WWTPs mainly focused on China, Europe, and North America. Short and long-chain perfluoroalkyl acids are widely detected in WWTP influents and effluents, with most WWTPs exhibiting low removal efficiencies for PFAS and biodegradation being the primary mechanism for PFAS transformation in WWTPs.

Detection of ultrashort-chain and other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in US bottled water

Steven J. Chow et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of PFAS in 101 bottled water products in the US and found that PFAS were detected in 39 products, primarily consisting of perfluorocarboxylic acids and perfluorosulfonic acids. The study also found that ultra-short-chain PFPrA was detected for the first time in bottled water, with spring water products containing higher levels of PFAS compared to purified water products.
