Nutrient supply controls the linkage between species abundance and ecological interactions in marine bacterial communities

Tianjiao Dai et al.

Summary: Nutrient scarcity has a significant impact on natural microbial communities. The ribosomal RNA gene operon (rrn) copy number is associated with bacterial growth rate and nutrient demand. The abundance of rrn copy number differs between nutrient-rich coastal sediment and nutrient-scarce pelagic zone of the global ocean. Positive correlations between community-level rrn copy number and nutrients are observed. Furthermore, inter-species co-exclusion is more apparent in coastal sediment than in ocean water samples.

The effects of three different microplastics on enzyme activities and microbial communities in soil

Meiling Yi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of three microplastics on soil enzyme activities and microbial community structure, showing that different microplastics had varying effects on enzyme activities, fibrous PP had a more persistent impact on microbial activity, and membranous PE and fibrous PP increased the alpha diversity of soil microbiota.

Dynamics of Soil Microbial N-Cycling Strategies in Response to Cadmium Stress

Haochun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reveals the impact of cadmium on soil microbial nitrogen cycling and functional gene abundance, showing that cadmium can stimulate microbial nitrogen absorption in non-N-amended soils, while promoting nitrogen transformation processes in N-amended soils. Cadmium alters the microbial C/N metabolism, indicating a nutrient-based adjustment of microbial strategies to enhance metal resistance.

Nitric oxide-dependent biodegradation of phenanthrene and fluoranthene: The co-occurrence of anaerobic and intra-aerobic pathways

Daijun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that microorganisms could efficiently degrade PAHs using NO in denitrification processes, providing a new perspective for the remediation of PAH pollution. Analysis of microbial community structure revealed that Pseudomonas and Ochrobactrum played key roles in NO-dependent phenanthrene degradation system.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of an industrial area in semi-arid Uzbekistan: spatial distribution, relationship with trace metals and risk assessment

Benjamin A. Musa Bandowe et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of PAHs near the Almalyk metal mining and metallurgical industrial complex were relatively high, but decreased significantly at greater distances from the factory, and did not exceed precautionary values set by soil quality guidelines of various countries. The research suggests that the cancer risk due to exposure to PAHs in soils in these areas is low.

Biodegradation and Removal of PAHs by Bacillus velezensis Isolated from Fermented Food

Omme Fatema Sultana et al.

Summary: Probiotic bacteria B. velezensis isolated from fermented foods have shown significant ability to degrade PAHs, with potential anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging effects. The biodegradation of BaP by B. velezensis may be regulated by ring-hydroxylating dioxygenase-initiated metabolic pathway. Live and heat-killed B. velezensis have also been found to remove BaP and Nap from phosphate buffer solution without cytotoxicity to certain human cells.
