Distribution of microplastics in soil and freshwater environments: Global analysis and framework for transport modeling

Vera S. Koutnik et al.

Summary: The concentration of microplastics in terrestrial environments can vary by up to eight orders of magnitude, with higher concentrations in inland locations such as glaciers and urban stormwater. Studies suggest that microplastic concentrations are lower in water bodies at terrestrial boundaries like estuaries. Fibers are preferentially transported to coastal sediments over inland water bodies, indicating potential differences in microplastic distribution patterns.

Spatial Distribution of Microplastics in Surficial Benthic Sediment of Lake Michigan and Lake Erie

Peter L. Lenaker et al.

Summary: The spatial distribution, concentration, particle size, and polymer compositions of microplastics in Lake Michigan and Lake Erie sediment were investigated. Fibers/lines were the most abundant of the five particle types characterized. Microplastic particles were observed in all samples with mean concentrations for particles greater than 0.355 mm of 65.2 p kg(-1) in Lake Michigan samples (n = 20) and 431 p kg(-1) in Lake Erie samples (n = 12).

Single-use plastics: Production, usage, disposal, and adverse impacts

Yuan Chen et al.

Summary: The increasing production and use of single-use plastics are causing pollution, wasting resources, and posing threats to plants, animals, and marine ecosystems. There is a growing push to minimize the use of single-use plastics, with regulatory tools and voluntary actions being suggested to reduce waste.

New insights into the vertical distribution and microbial degradation of microplastics in urban river sediments

Lihua Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vertical distribution of microplastics and the bacterial community assemblages in urban river sediments. The results showed that microplastics and associated microbial communities have vertical profiles in river sediments. The indicative plastic-degrading bacteria significantly increased in abundance and centrality from shallow to deep layers, suggesting a primary role in the degradation of microplastics in deep sediments.

Photo aging and fragmentation of polypropylene food packaging materials in artificial seawater

Xiaowei Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photo aging process of polypropylene food packaging materials in artificial seawater, revealing that the presence of antioxidant Irgafos 168 significantly inhibited the aging process by preventing the formation of hydroxyl radicals. This research provides insights into the role of antioxidants in affecting the environmental risk of hydrocarbon plastics in ocean environments.

Leaching of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from microplastics in fish oil: Kinetics and bioaccumulation

Bingbing Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that PBDEs in microplastics can leach upon ingestion, but the leaching kinetics of inherent contaminants from ingested microplastics are poorly understood. Although the bioaccumulation of PBDEs in fish oil can be accelerated in the gastrointestinal tract, the steady-state concentrations of PBDEs in cod tissue lipid through ingestion of microplastics were found to be below the lower end of the global PBDE concentration, suggesting that ingestion of microplastics by organisms remains a negligible pathway.

Occurrence, migration and health risk of phthalates in tap water, barreled water and bottled water in Tianjin, China

Chenchen Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence, migration, and health risks of phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in tap water, barreled water, and bottled water in Tianjin, China. Results showed high detection frequencies of PAEs, with DEHP having the highest concentration and positively correlated with storage time and temperature. The study also found that human carcinogenic risks of DEHP may reach the maximum acceptable level under certain conditions.

Enhanced phototransformation of atorvastatin by polystyrene microplastics: Critical role of aging

Hanyu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of polystyrene (PS) microplastics with different aging degrees on the phototransformation of atorvastatin (ATV) under simulated sunlight. Results showed that PS microplastics facilitated the phototransformation of ATV, with degradation rates linearly correlated with aging degree. The presence of oxygen-containing functional groups in PS microplastics increased light absorption and generation of ROS, impacting ATV phototransformation. Additionally, singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and triplet-excited state PS (3PS*) were identified as key contributors to the increased phototransformation of ATV.

Summary: Bisphenol A polycarbonate is a widely used engineering plastic, but excessive usage leads to the production of plastic wastes and high risks of chemical release. Migration of monomers, plastic additives, and non-intentionally added substances from food utensils made of melamine?formaldehyde resin following ultraviolet sterilization

Hyung Soo Kim et al.

Summary: UV sterilization of kitchenware is environmentally friendly and economical, but prolonged exposure raises concerns about the release of hazardous substances. Research showed that food utensils made of melamine-formaldehyde resin released significantly more melamine and formaldehyde after 7 days of UV irradiation. In addition, there was increased migration of plastic additives and NIAS from the resin under UV exposure compared to other synthetic resins.
