Ammonia-induced inhibition of manure-based continuous biomethanation process under different organic loading rates and associated microbial community dynamics

M. L. Christou et al.

Summary: In this study, the operation of three CTSRs under different OLR conditions revealed that increasing the OLR to raise the C/N ratio can intensify the inhibition of anaerobic processes, especially under high ammonia concentration. Different responses of bacterial and archaeal communities were observed under ammonia stress conditions. Additionally, the dominant methanogenesis route varied depending on the OLR and ammonia concentration.

Bioaugmentation of animal feces as a mean to mitigate environmental contamination with anthelmintic benzimidazoles

S. Lagos et al.

Summary: Anthelmintics are commonly used to control gastrointestinal nematode infestations in ruminants, but their limited metabolism in animals leads to excretion in feces, posing a potential environmental contamination risk. A thiabendazole-degrading bacterial consortium was found to effectively degrade benzimidazole anthelmintics, particularly compounds with smaller substituents. Bioaugmentation with this consortium enhanced the degradation of anthelmintics in sheep feces, especially when the feces were fumigated to eliminate the indigenous microbial community. Overall, bioaugmentation shows promise as an efficient method to reduce environmental exposure to persistent anthelmintic benzimidazoles.

A strategy to determine the fate of active chemical compounds in soil; applied to antimicrobially active substances

Bjorn J. A. Berendsen et al.

Summary: The fate of chemical substances in the environment, including persistence and mobility studies, is crucial for risk assessment in a circular biobased economy. Degradation products should also be considered, as they may have similar effects as the original substance.

Antibacterial Residue Excretion via Urine as an Indicator for Therapeutical Treatment Choice and Farm Waste Treatment

Maria Jesus Serrano et al.

Summary: This study described the excretion rate and duration of antimicrobials in pig urine during treatment, finding variations in degradation rate and total excretion time among different drugs. Despite similar effectiveness, sulfamethoxypyridazine would be the preferable choice due to only requiring waste treatment for 1 week post-treatment.
