Enhanced adsorption of perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) onto low oxygen content ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC): Adsorption behaviors and mechanisms

Xiaobo Lei et al.

Summary: The study found that ordered mesoporous carbons with lower oxygen content showed better adsorption efficiency and faster adsorption rate for PFOA. Multi-layer adsorption of PFOA onto mesoporous carbons was proposed, with background salts having a positive effect on adsorption and humic acid competing for adsorption sites.

Efficient detoxification of Cr(VI)-containing effluents by sequential adsorption and reduction using a novel cysteine-doped PANi@faujasite composite: Experimental study supported by advanced statistical physics prediction

Mohamed Laabd et al.

Summary: The novel Cys-PANi@FAU-50 composite showed promising potential for effectively detoxifying Cr(VI)-bearing wastewaters, with an open mesoporous structure decorated with nitrogen/oxygen-containing functional groups. The adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) was well-tailored using advanced statistical physics theory, with two distinct receptor sites providing reliable microscopic and macroscopic predictions of the process. The Cr(VI) ions were adsorbed and subsequently reduced and immobilized by chelation and electrostatic interactions, showing an endothermic spontaneous process with effortless regenerability and good reusability.

Ariana M. A. Pintor et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the multicomponent adsorption of pentavalent metalloids, revealing a multilayer, heterogeneous process. Competitive interactions between different metalloids in binary and ternary systems impact the adsorption process, with Sb(V) being the most affected and P(V) the least.

Adsorptive removal of pharmaceutical pollutants by defective metal organic framework UiO-66: Insight into the contribution of defects

Shuting Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contribution of defective structure in UiO-66 to the adsorptive removal of pharmaceutical pollutants from aqueous solution. The controlled defects greatly affected the adsorption equilibrium time, adsorption capacity, and adsorption selectivity of the MOF. Defective UiO-66 exhibited faster adsorption equilibrium and higher adsorption capacity compared to perfective UiO-66, providing insight into the relationship between defective structure and adsorption performance.

Cadmium removal by MgCl2 modified biochar derived from crayfish shell waste: Batch adsorption, response surface analysis and fixed bed filtration

Dawei Zhang et al.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a serious environmental problem with risks to water bodies and human health. This study investigated Cd(II) adsorption onto MgCl2 modified biochar, finding that MgC600 had a higher adsorption capacity due to enhanced ion exchange ability. A quadratic regression model accurately predicted the optimal adsorption conditions, and a new BJP model was proposed for fixed bed filtration process, accurately describing and promoting its application in wastewater treatment.

Adsorption of ammonia nitrogen and phenol onto the lignite surface: An experimental and molecular dynamics simulation study

Xiangyang Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the adsorption characteristics of ammonia nitrogen and phenol on lignite through experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the adsorption mechanisms of the two pollutants differ, with the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen promoting the adsorption of phenol. However, the presence of phenol slightly reduced the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen.

Increased coverage and high confidence in suspect screening of emerging contaminants in global environmental samples

Luisa F. Angeles et al.

Summary: Suspect screening using liquid chromatography with high resolution mass spectrometry offers a chance to expand the detection of emerging contaminants in the environment. A sensitive and selective workflow was developed and applied to identify 68 contaminants in wastewater and surface water from various countries, including pharmaceuticals and antifungal compounds. The balance between stringent criteria and high confidence in compound identification ensures the recognition of real features without missing low abundance features related to the analytes of interest.
