Insight from CMIP6 SSP-RCP scenarios for future drought characteristics in China

Summary: This study analyzes future drought characteristics over China using four climate models from CMIP6 under seven different scenarios, compared with CMIP5 models to highlight improvements in drought identification. The results show that CMIP6 has a robust capability in capturing historical drought characteristics, with projections of continuous drought in certain regions in the future, and an increase in drought frequency and intensity with higher emissions. The reduced biases in drought characteristics in CMIP6 models are likely associated with improvements in representing physical processes, providing valuable information for drought adaptation measures in China.
