Overview of Portable Assays for the Detection of Mycotoxins, Allergens, and Sanitation Monitoring

Ronald W. Sarver et al.

Summary: This article reviews the use of portable diagnostic kits to detect sources of contamination in food and ingredients as well as on surfaces and clean-in-place rinses. The kits provided accurate, rapid, and sensitive results for detection of mycotoxins, gluten, proteins, and ATP, which are important for ensuring food safety.

Assessing the Performance of a Real-Time Total Adenylate (ATP plus ADP plus AMP) Detection Assay for Surface Hygiene Monitoring in Food Manufacturing Plants and Commercial Kitchens

Chai Lay Ching et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of real-time total adenylate assay for food contact surface hygiene in 13 food processing plants and two commercial kitchens in Malaysia. It found that A3 correlated with microbial count, especially in environments associated with raw meat and ingredients with high microbial load. ROC analysis suggested an optimal threshold for A3 value to balance sensitivity and specificity.

Rapid Hygiene Assay Sensitive to Cumulative Adenylate Homologues Exhibits Equal or Higher Frequencies of Soil Contamination Detection than Assay Limited to ATP Detection

Casey Whyte et al.

Summary: This study compared the practical performance of ATP-based and AXP-based assays for detecting sanitary conditions in food processing facilities. Results demonstrated that the AXP assay detected contamination events approximately two times more often than the ATP-only assay, especially in meat processing facilities. The AXP method showed either equal or increased soil detection compared to the ATP method.

Cleaning procedures and cleanliness assessments of bucket milkers and suckling buckets on Japanese dairy farms

Yusuke Irie et al.

Summary: The investigation revealed issues in the cleaning procedures of milking and suckling equipment on Japanese farms. The cleanliness of manually washed bucket milkers and suckling buckets was found to be lower than that of automated cleaning, possibly due to inadequate cleaning procedures.
