Orr mechanism in transition of parallel shear flow

Yuxin Jiao et al.

Summary: The Orr mechanism plays a crucial role in the transition of plane Couette flow by inducing a lift-up effect that significantly amplifies spanwise velocity. Optimal perturbation analysis shows that the amplification of spanwise velocity is most active at streamwise length comparable to the given spanwise length of the perturbation. Furthermore, the Orr mechanism is found to be more energetically efficient in promoting oblique transition compared to streak transition in the cases examined.

Extension of QSQH theory of scale interaction in near-wall turbulence to all velocity components

Sergei Chernyshenko

Summary: The study extended the QSQH theory to consider the fluctuations of the large-scale component of wall friction in all three velocity components. It found this effect to be significant, especially in terms of the sensitivity of longitudinal and spanwise velocity fluctuations to variations in Reynolds number.
