Phenotypic and molecular characterization of a set of tropical maize inbred lines from a public breeding program in Brazil

Sirlene Viana de Faria et al.

Summary: In this study, the genetic diversity and population differentiation of tropical maize inbred lines from a breeding program in Brazil were characterized. The results showed significant variation in both phenotypic and genotypic characteristics among the inbred lines. The population structure analysis identified three subpopulations, which could be useful for future breeding programs.

Genetic Dissection of Grain Yield of Maize and Yield-Related Traits Through Association Mapping and Genomic Prediction

Juan Ma et al.

Summary: This study focused on maize breeding aiming for high yield, using genomic dissection and prediction methods to understand and improve grain yield. Two GWAS methods were applied on an association panel of 309 inbred lines, revealing significant trait-marker associations. The RKHS model showed better performance in predicting yield-related traits, while GBLUP performed slightly better for certain traits. The incorporation of significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms improved prediction accuracy, with TAMs showing effectiveness in improving accuracy for GYP and yield-related traits.

Evaluation of maize root growth and genome-wide association studies of root traits in response to low nitrogen supply at seedling emergence

Xichao Sun et al.

Summary: Genetic improvement of root traits could enhance nitrogen use efficiency in maize under nitrogen deficiency. Several candidate genes associated with different root traits under low-nitrate conditions were identified, providing potential targets for genetic enhancement. The heritability of plant traits varied significantly between low-nitrate and high-nitrate conditions, suggesting different genetic mechanisms involved in nitrogen utilization.
