Effects of freezing and short-term fixation on muscle mass, volume, and density

Kaitlyn C. Leonard et al.

Summary: Preventing postmortem deterioration of soft-tissues is essential for anatomical research. This study found that short-term freezing has minimal effects on muscle mass and density, while formalin fixation and ethanol storage significantly reduce mass and volume. Freezing may cause less distortion to muscle morphology than ethanol storage, but it can damage muscle microanatomy. Based on the results, correction factors were derived for different preparation methods.

Effects of long-term ethanol storage on muscle architecture

Kaitlyn C. Leonard et al.

Summary: This study quantified the effects of long-term storage on myological properties of muscle specimens, finding that muscle size significantly decreased in stored specimens, but fascicle lengths did not shorten significantly. The study suggests that muscle mass, volume, and density of specimens stored long-term in ethanol should be corrected for comparability to fresh specimens.

Effect of Temperature and Selection for Growth on Intracellular Lipid Accumulation and Adipogenic Gene Expression in Turkey Pectoralis Major Muscle Satellite Cells

Jiahui Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of temperature on intracellular lipid synthesis and adipogenic gene expression in satellite cells (SCs) isolated from turkey muscles. It was found that proliferating SCs are more responsive to thermal challenge than differentiating SCs, and growth-selection has increased the temperature sensitivity of SCs, potentially affecting the structure and composition of breast muscles significantly.
