The effects of metabolic substrates glucose, pyruvate, and lactate added to a skim milk-based semen extender for cooled storage of stallion sperm

Camilo Hernandez-Aviles et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that glucose optimizes stallion sperm quality in a skim milk-based semen extender at storage temperatures of 10 or 20 degrees C. Substrates supporting oxidative phosphorylation, such as pyruvate or lactate, did not improve sperm quality compared to glucose alone, and may have deleterious effects over time.
