Enhancing volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge by a novel cation-exchange resin assistant strategy

Heliang Pang et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel strategy for enhancing volatile fatty acids production from waste activated sludge using cation-exchange resin assistant anaerobic fermentation. The proposed process conditions achieved significant sludge disintegration and volatile fatty acids yield. The reusability tests showed that NaCl solution was the best for cation-exchange resin regeneration, with the regenerated resin performing comparably to the original resin.

Distinct effects of hypochlorite types on the reduction of antibiotic resistance genes during waste activated sludge fermentation: Insights of bacterial community, cellular activity, and genetic expression

Jingyang Luo et al.

Summary: The study showed that Ca(ClO)2 was more effective in attenuating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) compared to NaClO, with a high dose-dependency. NaClO treatment, on the other hand, could potentially lead to the propagation of certain ARGs at higher doses.

A preliminary metatranscriptomic insight of eggshells conditioning on substrates metabolism during food wastes anaerobic fermentation

Jingyang Luo et al.

Summary: The study revealed that eggshell conditioning can enhance volatile fatty acids production during food waste fermentation through regulating gene expression levels and altering microbial metabolic pathways. The analysis also showed a preliminary association between microbial distribution and genetic expressions, impacting the production of VFAs.

Granulation and response of anaerobic granular sludge to allicin stress while treating allicin-containing wastewater

Hang Peng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that AnGS cultivated under allicin stress showed excellent settleability and high COD removal efficiency, with tightly bound EPS and PN promoting the formation and tolerance of AnGS. Short-chain and long-chain AHLs played crucial roles in AnGS formation, while certain bacterial genera exhibited significant resistance to allicin.

Wanying Hu et al.

Summary: The joint effects of CuO NPs and MWCNTs enhance the bacterial response to environmental stimuli and interspecies communication, improving adaptive capacity to nanomaterial-related adverse environments. Additionally, the joint effects alleviate the inhibitory effects of sole nanomaterials on gene expression and catalytic activities of key enzymes.

Metatranscriptomic insights of the metabolic process enhancement during food wastes fermentation driven by linear alkylbenzene sulphonates

Jingyang Luo et al.

Summary: The study suggests that adding an appropriate amount of LAS can significantly increase VFA production by promoting the hydrolysis and solubilization of organic components in FW. Further analysis shows that the interaction between LAS and cell membranes enhances the cell permeability, facilitating the transport of substrates into functional microorganisms for metabolism.

Understanding the impact of allicin for organic matter release and microorganism community in anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and waste activated sludge

Ziletao Tao et al.

Summary: Allicin, an active component in garlic species, is found to inhibit anaerobic co-digestion, leading to minimal methane accumulation in the system. However, the release of intracellular material and increase in microbial diversity were observed in the presence of allicin.

Anaerobic fermentation metabolism of Moorella thermoacetica inhibited by copper nanoparticles: Comprehensive analyses of transcriptional response and enzyme activity

Yang Wu et al.

Summary: The study showed that copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) could inhibit the growth and metabolism of Moorella thermoacetica by causing cell membrane oxidative damage, reducing glucose consumption, and decreasing key enzyme activities related to acetic acid production. This suggests that the release of Cu NPs in the environment poses risks to anaerobic fermentation processes by affecting microbial transcriptional response and enzyme activity.
