Reduction of nutrient loads from agricultural subsurface drainage water in a small, edge-of-field constructed treatment wetland

Brad A. Gordon et al.

Summary: The study found that the small wetland received an average of 12.6 m of drainage water, 185 kg of nitrate-nitrogen, and 1.3 kg of total phosphorus annually, and removed 67% of input nitrate-nitrogen over four years. Most nitrate-nitrogen was removed in shallow groundwater flow after infiltration, while phosphorus removal through vegetation harvest was the primary means of removal.

Denitrification in wetlands: A review towards a quantification at global scale

Columba Martinez-Espinosa et al.

Summary: Research on the nitrogen cycle has shown that the production of reactive nitrogen globally exceeds the natural ecosystem's capacity for removal through denitrification, leading to negative impacts on the environment and human health. Wetland ecosystems play a significant role in denitrification, but uncertainties remain in quantifying the denitrification capacity of natural wetlands globally.
