Trace elements leaching from Pb-Zn mine waste (Plombieres, Belgium) and environmental implications

Jillian Helser et al.

Summary: The study characterized mine waste samples from a former Zn-Pb mining site, revealing high concentrations of metals such as Pb, Zn, Cd, and As, with lead present in highly bioaccessible forms posing potential risks. The release of lead was mainly controlled by the dissolution of cerussite, even at natural pH values. X-ray diffraction analyses showed a decrease in cerussite content after leaching with water, indicating the potential threats the mine waste poses to human health and the environment.

Contamination of children's sandboxes with potentially toxic elements in historically polluted industrial city

Nina Zupancic et al.

Summary: In Celje, Slovenia, children playing in sandboxes are at risk of poisoning due to toxic elements from zinc ore smelting and iron industry contamination. Some sandboxes contain sand from lead-zinc mine waste with higher than allowed levels of As, Ba, Cd, Pb and Zn. The study emphasizes the importance of combining health risk evaluation with bioaccessibility of elements in order to undertake remedial measures effectively.
