Recovery of valuable metals from spent LiNixCoyMnzO2 cathode material via phase transformation and stepwise leaching

Cheng Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a combined method of reduction roasting, leaching, and acid leaching was proposed to recover valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries. The optimal roasting conditions were determined, leading to the preferential extraction of lithium and subsequent leaching of other metals without a reducing agent. The removal of organic matters during the roasting process also improved wastewater treatment efficiency. Preliminary economic analysis confirmed the high potential for industrial production of the proposed process.
