Genetic parameters for efficiency of crude protein utilisation and its relationship with production traits across lactations in grazing dairy cows

Hewa B. P. C. Ariyarathne et al.

Summary: The study aimed to estimate genetic parameters of efficiency of crude protein utilization (ECPU) and its genetic correlation with other production traits in grazing dairy cows, and the findings suggest strong positive genetic correlations between ECPU and milk yield traits throughout lactation, while mostly negative genetic correlations between ECPU and mid-infrared predictions of milk urea concentration. Further research is needed to determine genetic relationships between ECPU and fertility traits for breeding purposes.

Acting rapidly to deploy readily available methane mitigation measures by sector can immediately slow global warming

Ilissa B. Ocko et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the climate benefits of fast action to reduce methane emissions compared to slower and delayed mitigation timelines. It finds that rapid implementation of available mitigation measures can significantly reduce near-term temperature rise and slow the global-mean rate of warming. Urgently scaling up efforts to implement methane mitigation measures is crucial to limiting climate damages in the near-term.

Review: Genetic selection of high-yielding dairy cattle toward sustainable farming systems in a rapidly changing world

L. F. Brito et al.

Summary: The significant increase in food production due to genetic selection and farming advancements, such as in the dairy cattle industry, has led to a doubling of milk production while reducing the overall cow population. However, drawbacks include decreased genetic diversity and negative genetic responses for traits related to fertility, health, and longevity due to intensive milk yield selection. Efforts are needed to refine selection indexes to prioritize traits related to animal welfare, health, and environmental efficiency.

Plasma proteins δ15N vs plasma urea as candidate biomarkers of between-animal variations of feed efficiency in beef cattle: Phenotypic and genetic evaluation

P. Guarnido-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study validated the potential of plasma delta N-15 to predict between-animal variations in feed efficiency, while showing a lower correlation for plasma urea. Two dietary factors, including metabolisable protein to net energy ratio and rumen protein balance, influenced the relationship between plasma delta N-15 and feed efficiency variations.
