Protective Effects of Lactoferrin against SARS-CoV-2 Infection In Vitro

Claudio Salaris et al.

Summary: The study indicates that lactoferrin may help prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection in vitro by inducing the expression of antiviral immune response genes and partially inhibiting viral replication.

The potential for Lactoferrin to reduce SARS-CoV-2 induced cytokine storm

Michal Zimecki et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, poses a serious global health threat with cytokine storm being a major factor in mortality. Lactoferrin has shown potential in suppressing cytokine storm and could be a promising approach in combating COVID-19 infection.

Estimated transmissibility and impact of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 in England

Nicholas G. Davies et al.

Summary: A new variant of SARS-CoV-2 has emerged in England, with a higher reproduction number and potential for large resurgences of COVID-19 cases. Without stringent control measures, it is projected that COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in England for the first 6 months of 2021 will exceed those in 2020. The variant has spread globally and exhibited similar transmission increases in Denmark, Switzerland, and the United States.

Risk of mortality in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern 202012/1: matched cohort study

Robert Challen et al.

Summary: The study found that the mortality hazard ratio associated with infection with VOC-202012/1 compared with previously circulating variants was 1.64, indicating an increase in deaths from 2.5 to 4.1 per 1000 detected cases in comparatively low risk group of covid-19 patients in the community. This suggests that infection with VOC-202012/1 may lead to substantial additional mortality compared with previously circulating variants, impacting healthcare capacity planning and control policies.

Mutation Signatures and In Silico Docking of Novel SARS-CoV-2 Variants of Concern

Nariman Shahhosseini et al.

Summary: One year after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, various new variants have emerged globally, with some showing increased transmissibility or infectivity. Studies have identified different mutations in the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of these variants, affecting their affinity for human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2). Genomic surveillance should be enhanced to detect and monitor new variants promptly.

Morphological cell profiling of SARS-CoV-2 infection identifies drug repurposing candidates for COVID-19

Carmen Mirabelli et al.

Summary: Drug repurposing is an effective method for rapidly identifying drugs against SARS-CoV-2. Research has found that lactoferrin can inhibit virus infection in multiple cell models, showing potential for treating COVID-19.

Dmitry Tworowski et al.

Summary: The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has generated a large amount of Big Data, which researchers analyze to provide new opportunities for the successful application of currently approved therapeutics and their combinations for conditions caused by a novel SARSCoV-2 infection. Effective responses to the pandemic require the development of efficient applications, methods, and algorithms for data analysis and reasoning.

The in vitro antiviral activity of lactoferrin against common human coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2 is mediated by targeting the heparan sulfate co-receptor

Yanmei Hu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the important role of HSPGs in SARS-CoV-2 cell attachment, and demonstrates the broad-spectrum antiviral activity of LF against various coronaviruses, especially with BLF being more potent than HLF. BLF binds to HSPGs to block viral attachment, and its antiviral activity can be antagonized by the HSPG mimetic heparin. Combination therapy experiment shows synergistic effect of LF with remdesivir in cell culture.
