Valencian red imprimaturs since Francisco Ribalta (1565-1628)

Amparo Castello-Palacios et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to confirm the use of a mixture of natural earth and a second unusual Al-rich red pigment in the imprimaturs of paintings dating back to 1600-1660 by Valencian Baroque painters. The study applied various analysis techniques, such as optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy-X-ray microanalysis, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, microRaman spectroscopy, and voltammetry of immobilized microparticles to analyze microsamples taken from six paintings. The findings provide valuable insights for the authentication of unknown Baroque paintings.

Improvement of the digital radiographic images of old paintings on wooden support through the anisotropic diffusion method

Jose A. Madrid Garcia et al.

Summary: The main defect types of historic-artistic paintings on wood include ruptures, scratches, twisting, etc., which may be caused by various factors. Image processing methods have been used to reduce the blurriness of radiographs and improve the analysis of defects in paintings. The algorithm based on anisotropic diffusion was applied to achieve sharper image edges and better visualization of defects.
