Adversarially Learned Anomaly Detection on CMS open data: re-discovering the top quark

O. Knapp et al.

Summary: The study applies the ALAD algorithm to detect new physics processes in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, achieving performances comparable to Variational Autoencoders and substantial improvement in some cases. Training the ALAD algorithm on 4.4 fb-1 of 8 TeV CMS Open Data, the study demonstrates a data-driven anomaly detection and characterization in real life, rediscovering the top quark at the LHC.

Improved quality tests of R11410-21 photomultiplier tubes for the XENONnT experiment

V. C. Antochi et al.

Summary: The paper presents an improved PMT testing procedure to ensure optimal performance in XENONnT, with new tests developed to detect light emission and PMT vacuum degradation. Out of 368 tested PMTs, 26 were excluded and the rest categorized based on performance, indicating significantly better PMT performance is expected in XENONnT due to the improvements in the testing procedure.

Event generation and statistical sampling for physics with deep generative models and a density information buffer

Sydney Otten et al.

Summary: The researchers investigate the use of generative modeling to simulate physical events, utilizing generative machine learning models to efficiently generate events with accurate distributions. By buffering density information and using Variational Autoencoders, they are able to construct an effective method for data generation that is computationally less expensive and can help detect anomalies in the process.

Global fits of axion-like particles to XENON1T and astrophysical data

Peter Athron et al.

Summary: The excess of electron recoil events observed in the XENON1T experiment has been proposed to potentially indicate axion-like particles (ALPs) originated from the Sun or dark matter halo, or due to trace amounts of tritium in the experiment. Combining XENON1T data with astrophysical probes supports the dark matter ALP hypothesis, despite the need for tuning unknown parameters. Bayesian analysis does not show strong preference for the ALP interpretation of the XENON1T excess over the background hypothesis, despite the tensions in the case of solar ALPs.
