Bouncing with shear: implications from quantum cosmology

Karthik Rajeev et al.

Summary: In this paper, we investigate the impact of introducing anisotropy on bouncing models of cosmology. We find that quantum effects can enable a bounce, even when classical bouncing is forbidden due to large anisotropic stress. By solving the Wheeler-deWitt equation, we observe a phase transition-like behavior in the probability of a bouncing universe, which sharply decreases as the shear density increases beyond a critical value. Our findings are supported by Lorentzian quantum cosmology and the Picard-Lefschetz theory.

Lorentzian path integral for quantum tunneling and WKB approximation for wave-function

Hiroki Matsui

Summary: This paper analyzes the tunneling amplitude in quantum mechanics using the Lorentzian Picard-Lefschetz formulation and compares it with the WKB analysis of the conventional Schrodinger equation. It shows that the Picard-Lefschetz Lorentzian formulation is consistent with the WKB approximation and the Euclidean path integral formulation. Additionally, it discusses some problems and a simpler semiclassical approximation of the Lorentzian path integral without integrating the lapse function.

Black hole induced false vacuum decay from first principles

Andrey Shkerin et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for calculating the rate of false vacuum decay induced by a black hole by considering complex tunneling solutions and the structure of different quantum vacua. Analyzing a two-dimensional scalar field model, it is found that the decay rates from Unruh vacuum are exponentially smaller than those from Hartle-Hawking state, but both become unsuppressed at high black hole temperatures. The disappearance of suppression at high temperatures for Unruh vacuum decay is attributed to the two-dimensional model and may be different in the realistic case of black holes in four dimensions.

Catalytic creation of a bubble universe induced by quintessence in five dimensions

Issei Koga et al.

Summary: The research focuses on bubble nucleation in five-dimensional spacetime catalyzed by quintessence, with a specific emphasis on the decay of a metastable Minkowski vacuum to an anti-de Sitter vacuum. Dynamics of the bubble and constraints on the catalysis parameter space are discussed. An inflation mechanism and origin of dark energy in the context of quintessence in five dimensions are proposed as applications of the model.

Lorentzian worldline path integral approach to Schwinger effect

Karthik Rajeev

Summary: By using the worldline path integral method, the positive frequency modes of a complex scalar field in a constant electric field can be accurately represented in three different gauges, and exact Bogoliubov coefficients and particle numbers can be derived. This approach can serve as a promising alternative in nontrivial cases, especially when closed-form solutions are not available.
