Shear-induced nanostructural changes in micelles formed by sugar-based surfactants with varied anomeric configuration

Johan Larsson et al.

Summary: Recent studies have demonstrated that the rheological properties of systems formed by the self-assembly of long tail sugar-based surfactants into worm-like micelles can be tuned by subtle modifications of the surfactant monomer's molecular characteristics. The anomeric configuration of the surfactant was found to induce significant changes in nanostructure and rheology, with shear-thinning behavior relating to the re-arrangement of worm-like micelles. These findings provide a detailed mechanism by which sugar-based surfactants control the rheology of the fluid, offering potential for future studies in this area.

(Macro)molecular self-assembly for hydrogel drug delivery

Matthew J. Webber et al.

Summary: Hydrogels prepared via self-assembly offer scalable and tunable platforms for drug delivery applications. Peptides are widely used as building blocks for self-assembly, while stimuli-responsive self-assembly provides opportunities for more precise drug action. Double-network hydrogels combine the beneficial properties of both self-assembled and covalent networks.

Non-Equilibrium Large-Scale Membrane Transformations Driven by MinDE Biochemical Reaction Cycles

Meifang Fu et al.

Summary: The MinDE proteins in E. coli have the ability to oscillate concentration gradients and deform giant vesicles through mechanical work. In a new model membrane system, MinDE oscillations deform flat vesicles into tubules and promote membrane spreading, as well as induce bud formation depending on the membrane and buffer compositions. Ultimately, this study demonstrates the potential for straightforward mechanochemical coupling between MinDE biochemical reaction cycle and membrane transformation.

The Transient Covalent Bond in Abiotic Nonequilibrium Systems

Lasith S. Kariyawasam et al.

Summary: Biochemical systems use the energy of chemical fuels to operate out-of-equilibrium and perform critical functions. The formation of transient covalent bonds is a key tool in designing analogous reaction networks. Recent demonstrations of abiotic nonequilibrium systems using fuel chemistries have shown how different fuel reactions can impact a wide range of nonequilibrium behaviors, from self-assembly to the operation of molecular machines.

Self-healing mechanism and bioelectrochemical interface properties of core-shell guanosine-borate hydrogels

Hai Wang et al.

Summary: The self-healing mechanism and bioelectrochemical interface properties of supramolecular gels have been rarely explored. A constitutive fibril-reorganization model reveals the self-healing process of core-shell structured guanosine-borate (GB) hydrogels, driven by interfibrillar interactions at the supramolecular polymer scale. Different types of GB hydrogel nanofibers show different sensitivities and linear detection ranges for tumor marker sensing.
