Experimental Study of the Influence of the Adsorbate Layer Composition on the Wetting of Different Substrates with Water

Michaela Heier et al.

Summary: Wetting is strongly influenced by adsorbate layers, with the composition of the adsorbate layer being the main factor determining the water contact angle on different substrates. The thickness of the adsorbate layer prevents a direct influence of the substrate on the water contact angle. By utilizing XPS data and contact angle results from gold samples, predictions can be made for water contact angles on steel and titanium samples.

Increasing Antibacterial Efficiency of Cu Surfaces by targeted Surface Functionalization via Ultrashort Pulsed Direct Laser Interference Patterning

Daniel W. Mueller et al.

Summary: This study investigates the enhancement of antibacterial properties of copper surfaces against Escherichia coli through tailored functionalization using ultrashort pulsed direct laser interference patterning (USP-DLIP), which increases bacteria/surface contact area and modifies surface chemistry to improve antibacterial effectiveness. Results demonstrate a delicate interplay between bacterial adhesion and expression of antibacterial properties, achieving up to a 15-fold reduction in bacterial cell viability for E. coli on USP-DLIP surfaces compared to smooth Cu surfaces.

Fabrication of biomimetic anisotropic super-hydrophobic surface with rice leaf-like structures by femtosecond laser

Liang Yang et al.

Summary: It was discovered that the anisotropic hydrophobicity of rice leaves is due to their multi-level grooves and tiny papillary microstructures. Inspired by rice leaves, a rice leaf-like anisotropic super-hydrophobic aluminum surface was created using femtosecond laser raster scanning. The structured aluminum surface showed super-hydrophobicity with sliding anisotropy, with a contact angle of 153 degrees and sliding angles of 9 degrees along the groove direction and 34 degrees perpendicular to the groove direction.

Tailored wetting of copper using precise nanosecond direct laser interference patterning

Robert Baumann et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative method for tailoring the wettability of copper surfaces using DLIP technology, forming a pattern with a spatial period of 3.3 μm and texture depths up to 1.01 μm through laser interference. The wettability can be adjusted to static water contact angles between 120 and 150 degrees by utilizing a low-cost nanosecond laser source and innovative beam shaping setup.

Influence of fluence, beam overlap and aging on the wettability of pulsed Nd3+:YAG nanosecond laser-textured Cu and Al sheets

Y. Esther Blesso Vidhya et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the fabrication of superhydrophobic and hydrophobic surfaces on Al and Cu metal sheets through laser processing and aging, without the need for additional chemical treatment. The influence of laser parameters on the surface textures and wettability, as well as the transition from hydrophilic to hydrophobic behavior over time, are analyzed. The experimental findings highlight the ability to control the wettability of Al and Cu sheets by adjusting laser parameters.
