Cohort profile: the multigeneration Respiratory Health in Northern Europe, Spain and Australia (RHINESSA) cohort

Cecilie Svanes et al.

Summary: The RHINESSA cohort aims to investigate the impact of exposures before conception and in previous generations on health and disease, particularly allergies and respiratory health. Data collected so far suggests that parental environment and male prepuberty may play important roles in asthma and lung function. Future plans include follow-up studies and linkage with health registries.

Phylum Synergistetes in the oral cavity: A possible contributor to periodontal disease

Barbara Anne McCracken et al.

Summary: With new technologies, microbial contributions to periodontal disease have come under scrutiny again, with members of the phylum Synergistetes being associated with the disease. These bacteria can be found in various habitats, both inside and outside of mammalian hosts. Many identified phylotypes have yet to be cultivated.

Have you had bleeding from your gums? Self-report to identify giNGival inflammation (The SING diagnostic accuracy and diagnostic model development study)

Beatriz Goulao et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the diagnostic performance of self-reported oral health questions and developed a diagnostic model to predict gingival inflammation in systemically healthy adults in the UK. Self-reported questions about bleeding gums showed the best performance, while the final diagnostic model combined self-reported bleeding, oral health behavior, smoking status, and previous dental treatments. The model had good sensitivity in diagnosing gingival inflammation but should be externally validated for identifying healthy individuals.
