The effects of pre-sleep consumption of casein protein on next-morning measures of RMR and appetite compared between sedentary pre- and postmenopausal women

Christopher M. Schattinger et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare the next-morning responses of resting metabolic rate (RMR) and appetite in pre- and postmenopausal women after pre-sleep consumption of casein protein (CP). The results showed that pre-sleep consumption of CP did not change RMR, respiratory exchange ratio (RER), or appetite the next morning in both pre- and postmenopausal women. These findings suggest that pre-sleep protein intake is not detrimental to next-day metabolism or appetite, and menopause may not impact next-morning RMR, RER, or appetite after consuming CP before sleep.

Summary: Total daily energy expenditure increases with fat-free mass in a power-law manner, showing four distinct life stages. The expenditure remains stable in adulthood (20 to 60 years), even during pregnancy, but declines in older adults.
