Recent Water Mass Changes Reveal Mechanisms of Ocean Warming

Jan D. Zika et al.

Summary: A study has shown that over 90% of the additional heat in the Earth system over recent decades has been stored in the ocean. Recent observational programs have revealed diverse patterns of ocean heat content change, but it remains unclear whether this diversity is due to heat being added and mixed in the ocean or changes in water circulation redistributing existing water masses. It is suggested that near-term projections of ocean heat content change and sea level change will depend on understanding and predicting changes in ocean redistribution.

Drivers of Local Ocean Heat Content Variability in ECCOv4

Jan-Erik Tesdal et al.

Summary: Global climate variability is influenced by variation in upper-ocean heat content, with atmospheric forcing and ocean transport mechanisms playing a key role. This study used a two-decade ocean state estimate to analyze the balance between these factors at different depth horizons and resolutions, finding that advection dominates in the tropics while forcing is more relevant in higher latitudes and subtropics. The study also identified comprehensive dynamical regimes in the ocean heat budget analysis, providing useful insights for future studies on ocean heat content variability.

Regional Asymmetries in Ocean Heat and Carbon Storage due to Dynamic Redistribution in Climate Model Projections

Richard G. Williams et al.

Summary: The study assesses projected changes in ocean heat and carbon storage, explaining opposing regional patterns in the storage of heat and carbon anomalies. Added tracer accounts for net tracer source and advection, while redistributed tracer considers time-varying circulation. Added heat and carbon usually have a similar sign, while redistributed heat and carbon consistently have an opposing sign.

20th century cooling of the deep ocean contributed to delayed acceleration of Earth's energy imbalance

A. Bagnell et al.

Summary: By reconstructing historical changes in global ocean heat content, the study reveals that there was a relatively balanced global ocean heat content during most of the latter half of the 20th century, but there has been a significant acceleration in ocean warming over the past three decades. Additionally, the global deep ocean has shifted from cooling to warming in the 21st century.

What causes the spread of model projections of ocean dynamic sea-level change in response to greenhouse gas forcing?

Matthew P. Couldrey et al.

Summary: Research shows that the differences in sea level changes between different AOGCMs are mainly caused by variations in ocean model formulation, rather than diversity in surface flux. Heat flux drives the global pattern of sea level change, while momentum and water flux changes cause localized features. North Atlantic heat uptake and transport adjustment are important factors affecting sea level changes.
