Indo-Pacific Warming Induced by a Weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Shantong Sun et al.

Summary: The reorganization of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) leads to interbasin heat transport, which redistributes heat between the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific basins. This transient response plays a key role in the global ocean heat budget, especially in a changing climate.

The Role of Atlantic Basin Geometry in Meridional Overturning Circulation

Sarah Ragen et al.

Summary: This study investigates how the shape of the eastern and western continental boundaries of the Atlantic Ocean influences the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) through idealized simulations. The results show that changing the coastline shape of the Atlantic basin affects the strength and structure of the AMOC in distinct ways. The American coastline has a greater impact on AMOC strength, while the African coastline influences the deep circulation. The study also reveals a robust physical link between AMOC and the North Atlantic western boundary density gradient, as AMOC strength and depth scale well with the meridional density difference of the basin.
