Understanding Future Increases in Precipitation Extremes in Global Land Monsoon Regions

Meiyu Chang et al.

Summary: This study investigates future changes in daily precipitation extremes and explores the involved physics over the global land monsoon (GM) region. The results show that there will be a continuous increase in precipitation extremes in the future, with dynamics playing a significant role in this change.

Summary: The study evaluated the accuracy of global climate models in predicting changes in precipitation extremes under current climate conditions, with most models performing well in this aspect. These models passed two key tests in current climate supporting the use of fractional measures to evaluate future changes in the probability of precipitation extremes.

Biases Beyond the Mean in CMIP6 Extreme Precipitation: A Global Investigation

Hebatallah Mohamed Abdelmoaty et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of CMIP6 models in reproducing the statistical properties of observed annual maxima of daily precipitation using various methods. The results indicate good matching in terms of frequency and magnitude of extremes, but biases exist in terms of mean and variation, with some models performing well.

The Fall and Rise of the Global Climate Model

Johannes Mulmenstadt et al.

Summary: Global models are essential for climate projections, but conventional models have errors in both cloud physics and circulation features. Recent research shows a global model capable of accurately representing the impact of aerosols on clouds, potentially improving cloud process fidelity. Future models with km-scale resolution may enhance regional circulation and improve regional climate projection capabilities.

The Convective-To-Total Precipitation Ratio and the Drizzling Bias in Climate Models

Di Chen et al.

Summary: The overestimation of precipitation frequency and duration, coupled with the underestimation of intensity, known as the drizzling bias, is a long-standing issue in global climate models. By exploring this problem from the perspective of precipitation partitioning, it was found that high convective-to-total precipitation ratios in low latitudes contribute to the drizzling bias. Some CMIP6 models show reduced drizzling bias with decreased convective precipitation ratios, suggesting that more reasonable precipitation partitioning and finer model resolution could alleviate this bias.

Effects of coupling a stochastic convective parameterization with the Zhang-McFarlane scheme on precipitation simulation in the DOE E3SMv1.0 atmosphere model

Yong Wang et al.

Summary: The implementation of stochastic deep convection parameterization in the E3SM Atmosphere Model improves the simulation of precipitation by addressing the issue of too much light rain and too little heavy rain. This shift towards heavier rain in the total precipitation amount is achieved by less frequent convection and enhanced intense large-scale and convective precipitation, leading to better agreement with observations in terms of synoptic and intraseasonal variabilities.
