Additives on aged bitumens: What probe to distinguish between rejuvenating and fluxing effects?

Valeria Loise et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the different effects of additives on aged bitumen, including the use of rejuvenator and softening agents. Rejuvenators can bring bitumen back to its initial state, increasing the longevity of asphalt pavements; however, softening agents, while making aged bitumen more workable, may eventually result in road pavement breakage.

Towards an understanding of diffusion mechanism of bio-rejuvenators in aged asphalt binder through molecular dynamics simulation

Heyang Ding et al.

Summary: This study developed asphalt binder diffusion models through molecular dynamics simulation, finding that bio-rejuvenators have a positive effect on the fusion process between virgin and aged asphalt binder. The regenerative effects of BR-1 and BR-5 differ during the diffusion process of aged asphalt binder, with BR-5 attracting PAHs to achieve the goal of aged asphalt binder regeneration.

Quantifying the effective mobilized RAP content during hot in-place recycling techniques

Yuetan Ma et al.

Summary: A new method called the ignition oven method was developed to quantify the effective mobilized RAP content during HIR procedures, which has been proven effective and comparable to the FTIR methods. The temperatures and dosage of additives play a critical role in improving the mobilization of RAP and should be optimized for achieving sustainable pavement.

Effectiveness of Different Categories of Rejuvenators in Recycled Asphalt Mixtures

Gurunath Guduru et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different rejuvenators in restoring the desired properties of asphalt mixes with a high content of reclaimed asphalt pavement material. Results indicate that rejuvenators of the paraffinic oil category showed the lowest effectiveness, while rejuvenators of the fatty acids category were more effective in improving asphalt mix performance. Crude tallow was found to have inferior fatigue resistance properties.
