Different agricultural practices specify bacterial community compositions in the soil rhizosphere and root zone

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: We are only beginning to understand how agricultural practices, soil properties, and geographic factors influence bacterial communities and their impact on soil processes. This study quantifies the effects of typical agricultural practices and corresponding soil physicochemical characteristics on bacterial diversity and community compositions in rhizosphere and root zone soils. The results show that species richness in the rhizosphere is significantly higher than in root zone soils, with certain bacterial populations playing important roles in carbon and nitrogen cycling. Crop rotation and tillage practices have significant effects on bacterial diversity and relative abundance by influencing soil pH, available phosphorus, and available nitrogen. The study also suggests that the differences in bacterial functional capabilities are closely related to the physicochemical properties of surrounding soils. These findings highlight the importance of soil-plant interactions in shaping soil bacterial community structure and the challenges in linking soil ecosystem function to microbial processes.

Environmental stress destabilizes microbial networks

Damian J. Hernandez et al.

Summary: Research shows that natural microbiomes under persistent stress exhibit characteristics of instability, with declines in microbial diversity and changes in network properties of stable communities. Pathogenic taxa decrease while oligotrophs and mutualists increase along stress gradients, impacting the negative:positive cohesion and potentially destabilizing microbiomes and their ecosystem services.

Comparing straw, compost, and biochar regarding their suitability as agricultural soil amendments to affect soil structure, nutrient leaching, microbial communities, and the fate of pesticides

Martin Siedt et al.

Summary: Organic amendments play a critical role in retaining nutrients and pesticides in agricultural soils, with biochar showing effectiveness in increasing soil sorption capacity. However, the overall impacts of different organic materials can vary greatly, highlighting the need for further studies to compare and optimize their use in soil management practices.

Long-term fertilisation reveals close associations between soil organic carbon composition and microbial traits at aggregate scales

Yan Duan et al.

Summary: Long-term fertilisation has been found to increase the levels of free particulate organic carbon and occluded particulate organic carbon in soil, while decreasing the relative abundance of aromatic carbon in macroaggregates. Additionally, regardless of fertilisation regime, cellulose-degrading genes were more abundant in the clay and silt fractions compared to the macro- and microaggregates. Structural equation modeling revealed that soil pH and total nitrogen content were the major drivers affecting the physical fractions and chemical structure of soil organic carbon following long-term fertilisation, primarily through changes in bacterial community composition and fungal genes involved in carbon cycling within soil aggregates.

Saprotrophic fungal communities in arable soils are strongly associated with soil fertility and stoichiometry

Qi Ning et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that long-term application of chemical combined with organic fertilizers can significantly increase soil fertility, promote the growth of saprotrophic fungi, and improve the C:N and N:P ratios in soil. The composition of saprotrophic fungi is closely related to the C:N and N:P ratios in soil, indicating that nitrogen status is an important factor influencing saprotrophic fungal communities.

Biochar in climate change mitigation

Johannes Lehmann et al.

Summary: Climate change mitigation strategies based on biochar generation and its application to agricultural soils can effectively sequester carbon, with trade-offs between biogeochemical and economic considerations. Emission reductions and CO2 removal by biochar systems depend on the energy being replaced, with varying impacts when biochar is used instead of coal or renewable energy sources. Opportunities for increasing crop yields exist with biochar additions, but the trade-offs and relationships among emissions reductions, energy production, and fertilizer responses must be carefully considered for effective climate change mitigation.

Soil bacterial communities interact with silicon fraction transformation and promote rice yield after long-term straw return

Alin Song et al.

Summary: Returning crop straw into the soil significantly increased soil bioavailable silicon and rice yield, and altered soil microbial community. Acidobacteria was positively associated with amorphous Si, while other microbial taxa were negatively related to organic matter adsorbed and Fe/Mn-oxide-combined Si in soils. These findings suggest that soil bacterial community and diversity play a crucial role in the biological silicon cycle in agroecosystems.
