Second life and recycling: Energy and environmental sustainability perspectives for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

Yanqiu Tao et al.

Summary: Research shows that LIBs with higher specific energy perform better in terms of lifecycle environmental performance, but their environmental benefits from second life application are less pronounced. Direct cathode recycling is found to be the most effective method in reducing environmental impacts, while hydrometallurgical recycling has limited sustainability benefits for high-performance LIBs. Battery design with less aluminum and alternative anode materials, like silicon-based anode, could enable more sustainable LIB recycling.

Simulation-based life cycle assessment for hydrometallurgical recycling of mixed LIB and NiMH waste

Marja Rinne et al.

Summary: The study combines flowsheet simulation and life cycle assessment to investigate a hydrometallurgical battery recycling process that reduces chemical consumption and environmental impacts. Sodium sulfate crystallization is found to be the most environmentally feasible option, with significant potential reductions in climate change, acidification, freshwater eutrophication, and human toxicity achievable.

Recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries in view of green chemistry

Yukun Li et al.

Summary: The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for critical metal supply and environmental protection. State-of-the-art recycling technologies are moving towards being more material/energy efficient in line with the principles of green chemistry, with a focus on selective recycling and direct regeneration to prevent secondary pollution. Additionally, green design of batteries and process design throughout the life cycle of LIBs are seen as important areas for further research and improvement.

Technologies of lithium recycling from waste lithium ion batteries: a review

Hyuntae Bae et al.

Summary: The consumption of lithium-based materials has doubled in eight years due to the surge in demand for lithium applications, such as lithium-ion batteries. The market size for lithium-ion batteries has grown steadily to $40 billion, with lithium extracted from natural minerals and brines. Despite an 18% increase in lithium consumption from 2018 to 2019, limited reserves may lead to depletion, prompting the development of lithium recycling technologies. However, less than 1 percent of lithium is currently recycled, underscoring the need for future improvement in recycling technologies.
