Evaluating the direct rebound effect of electricity consumption: An empirical analysis of the provincial level in China

Ming Meng et al.

Summary: The research finds that the rebound effect in electricity consumption in China has been significantly weakening the energy-saving efforts, with the effect level influenced by electricity prices intervened by local governments and the level of socioeconomic development. To address this issue, the Chinese government is advised to further advance market-oriented reforms in the electric power industry, reduce electricity price subsidies in developed regions, and regulate investments in generation expansion.

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the time-series of NDVI and identified the trajectory type and time nodes of cultivated land change using clustering methods. The results showed high overall accuracy, with majority of cultivated land converting to non-cultivated land during 1989-2005 and reclamation occurring in 2009, 2011, and 2013. Permanent cultivated land accounted for the highest proportion among trajectory types.

Continues monitoring of subsidence water in mining area from the eastern plain in China from 1986 to 2018 using Landsat imagery and Google Earth Engine

Tingting He et al.

Summary: The eastern plain of China is a significant grain and coal production area, where coal mining can lead to land subsidence and waterlogging, destroying cultivated land. A new method using Landsat imagery and the Google Earth Engine platform was developed to generate dynamic maps of subsidence ponding and restoration years, accurately distinguishing between subsidence water and artificially excavated water. The method, with high identification accuracies, can provide valuable data for decision-making and land reclamation planning.

Study of plant configuration pattern in guided vegetation restoration: A case study of semiarid underground mining areas in Western China

Ying Liu et al.

Summary: The large-scale and high intensity mining of coal resources has worsened the fragile plant ecosystem in Western China, leading to the need for guided restoration of damaged vegetation. However, achieving this restoration in semiarid mining areas faces challenges such as configuring plant species and determining vegetation coverage thresholds. This study used GIS and remote sensing data to analyze vegetation coverage trends, identify areas of degraded vegetation, classify native plants, and determine vegetation coverage thresholds for different site conditions.

Coupling and coordination of coal mining intensity and social-ecological resilience in China

Wu Xiao et al.

Summary: Coal resources are widely distributed and abundant in China, but the negative impacts of mining restrict the sustainable development of mining areas. By estimating mining intensity and social-ecological resilience at the county level, China's mining areas were divided into nine regions with differentiated strategies proposed for ecological restoration and resource development. Special attention should be given to high mining intensity-low resilience areas to prevent ecological risks and minimize economic effects.

Persistent effects of underground longwall coal mining on freshwater wetland hydrology

T. J. Mason et al.

Summary: Global wetlands have suffered significant losses due to human activities, particularly underground coal mining which disrupts hydrological processes and reduces soil moisture in mined wetlands compared to unmined ones. This severe hydrological change has implications for biodiversity and ecosystem services, highlighting the need for more emphasis on impact avoidance and minimisation in mine design and approval processes to protect water and biodiversity values.

A boundary model of terrain reconstruction in a coal-mining subsidence waterlogged area

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: Mining of coal in areas with high groundwater levels leads to surface water accumulation, making land reclamation challenging. A mathematical model using the Probability Integral Method was established to help reconstruct terrain, and resulted in successful land reclamation and efficient land utilization through dividing the subsidence area into different regions. This method provides a new technology for eco-environment treatment in high groundwater level areas experiencing subsidence.

Evaluating the environmental and economic impact of mining for post-mined land restoration and land-use: A review

Adator Stephanie Worlanyo et al.

Summary: Mining has been a significant driver of economic development, but it also has negative impacts on the environment and society. Reclamation plays a crucial role in mitigating the negative effects of mining and restoring soil productivity, stimulating microbial growth, and facilitating early ecological succession. Proper planning and analysis are essential before embarking on post-mining rehabilitation to ensure sustainable land use.

Surface mines show little progress towards native species forest restoration following 35 years of passive management after initial reclamation

Thomas A. Ruggles et al.

Summary: Passive restoration techniques rely on natural plant community succession, but the establishment of native plants in highly degraded soil and competition with invasive species can affect restoration outcomes. Evaluation of three former surface mines showed that native woody plants struggle to establish while invasive species thrive, raising doubts about achieving the desired outcome of a native species forest in significantly degraded habitats through passive management succession.

Why don't environmental bonds fully cover reclamation costs?

Peifang Yang et al.

Summary: Governments often require environmental bonds from extractive industry firms to cover reclamation liabilities, but may reasonably ask for a smaller amount than the full reclamation cost to maximize revenue. This is because large bonds could discourage extractive activities and reduce fiscal income, and the selected bonding rate depends on the regulator's estimation of exit elasticity in response to bonding. Various examples from Western Australia, the US Bureau of Land Management, and Texas demonstrate this principle.

Jingmin Xu et al.

Summary: This study conducted field monitoring of longwall mining-induced ground subsidence in Shendong coalfield, China, and revealed the dynamic characteristics of ground subsidence under different mining conditions. Results showed that the subsidence ratio is higher for longwall panels with a width to depth ratio closer to 1.35-1.6, with maximum subsidence speed reaching 0.4 m/day.

Summary: The research shows that China still prioritizes economic benefits over environmental responsibility, with over 90% of provinces excelling in coal mining expertise but 70% performing poorly in land recovery. Before the implementation of the Atmospheric Pollution Prevention Action Plan (APCP), high GDP provinces had less efficient land recovery compared to low GDP provinces. The efficiency of land recovery improved after the implementation of the APCP policy.

Summary: The landform instability of the abandoned Nuria kaolin mine in Spain has led to frequent and severe environmental impacts, with mining activity reducing the original drainage network and causing active advancing gullies. To restore stability, a geomorphic design and proper drainage system are essential, with public/private collaboration agreements playing a key role in the rehabilitation of abandoned mines.

Summary: Developing acceptable completion criteria is crucial for successful mine closure planning, but challenges such as inconsistent coordination, lack of knowledge about restoration, and reliance on traditional practices hinder the process. Ongoing research on ecological restoration and technological innovations is essential, but addressing organizational and regulatory barriers is also necessary to achieve a coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach for defining completion criteria and advancing successful mine rehabilitation.
