Experimental development of low cement content and recycled construction and demolition waste aggregates concrete

Keila Robalo et al.

Summary: Innovative eco-efficient concrete with low cement content and CDW recycled aggregates was developed to reduce the environmental impact of construction. By maximizing the replacement of natural by CDW aggregates, sustainable LCRAC with optimized cement dosage was produced for structural applications. The strength reduction of LCRAC when incorporating high volume of CDW is limited to 30%, due to the balanced strength loss of CDW by the matrix high compactness and higher strength.

Improving construction and demolition waste collection service in an urban area using a simheuristic approach: A case study in Sydney, Australia

Maziar Yazdani et al.

Summary: The increase in construction and demolition waste due to urbanization and population growth has raised concerns over environmental impacts. A novel simulation-optimization approach using a hybrid Genetic Algorithm is proposed to optimize waste collection routing. The results demonstrate high performance of the proposed simheuristic algorithm.

Utilization of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash (IBA) aggregates in high-strength pervious concrete

Peiliang Shen et al.

Summary: This study showed that an appropriate amount of IBA can enhance the mechanical properties of concrete, but excessive use can lead to reduced water permeability and mechanical properties. Concrete with 100% IBA can meet the required permeability and compressive strength for permeable pedestrian pavers. Furthermore, the incorporation of IBA in concrete can decrease density and improve thermal insulation.

Transmission micro-focus X-ray radiographic measurements towards in-situ tracing capillary imbibition fronts and paths in ultra-thin concrete slices

Qiang Zeng et al.

Summary: The study aimed to trace imbibition fronts and paths in concrete using transmission microfocus X-ray radiographic tests, with CsCl enhancing X-ray attenuation. Results showed designed experiments enable acquisition of X-ray attenuation images with enhanced contrast, aiding in identifying capillary imbibition paths. Liquid was found to penetrate through the interfacial transition zone and highly porous cement paste more easily.

Visualization of mercury percolation in porous hardened cement paste by means of X-ray computed tomography

Yuxuan Qi et al.

Summary: Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) is commonly used for pore structure characterization in porous materials, but the percolation of mercury in porous cement-based materials during MIP has not been thoroughly studied before. This study visually probes the mercury percolation in porous hardened cement paste (HCP) using X-ray computed tomography (X-CT), and introduces novel double surface coatings to aid in understanding the phenomenon. The findings demonstrate that MIP characteristics change with applied pressure and equilibrium time, but percolation pore size remains consistent.

Effect of pumice powder and nano-clay on the strength and permeability of fiber-reinforced pervious concrete incorporating recycled concrete aggregate

Peyman Mehrabi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of recycled concrete aggregate and pozzolanic additives as partial replacements in pervious concrete. The results showed that using RCA decreased the density and strength of concrete, while pumice and nano-clay additives had positive effects on concrete properties. Different types of fibers also affected the performance of concrete, with steel fiber performing the best.

Characterising the resilient behaviour of pavement subgrade with construction and demolition waste under Freeze-Thaw cycles

Junhui Zhang et al.

Summary: Recycling construction and demolition waste as fillers in pavement subgrade is a sustainable paving technology, but limited research exists on the dynamic resilient modulus characteristics of C&D waste under freeze-thaw cycles. This study aims to reveal the properties and establish a prediction model of the dynamic resilient modulus of C&D waste under various freeze-thaw cycles through laboratory tests.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility, strength, and microstructure of high strength eco-concrete with recycled clay brick aggregate and calcined clay. Results showed that the mechanical properties and microstructure of hardened samples containing up to 30% recycled clay brick aggregate improved, but no significant improvement was observed beyond that level when maintaining a constant calcined clay content.
