Municipal solid waste management and landfilling technologies: a review

Sonil Nanda et al.

Summary: The USA, China, and India are the top producers of municipal solid waste, with waste composition varying based on income levels. Municipal solid waste management options include recycling, incineration, waste-to-energy conversion, composting, or landfilling. Landfilling is a preferred method globally, with critical factors for sustainability including liners, soil cover thickness, leachate collection, and gas recovery facilities. Landfills act as ecological reactors undergoing various transformations, with bioreactor landfills emerging as a next-generation solution for efficient waste stabilization through controlled recirculation.

Process tracing of PCDD/Fs from economizer to APCDs during solid waste incineration: Re-formation and transformation mechanisms

Yuanqing Huang et al.

Summary: The emission of PCDD/Fs from incineration plants can exacerbate the NIMBY syndrome, especially if the plants fail to meet emission standards. This study focused on the formation and transformation of PCDD/Fs in boilers under steady operational conditions, with results showing that increasing air supply can worsen PCDD/Fs formation and lead to substandard emissions. Quantitative structure-activity relationship modeling was used to identify dominant factors in the formation mechanism, and the removal rates of PCDD/Fs were found to be significantly correlated with certain factors. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing operational parameters in incineration plants to prevent substandard emissions.
