Preparation of monodisperse polystyrene nanoparticles with tunable sizes based on soap-free emulsion polymerization technology

Summary: In this study, a one-step method for the preparation of monodispersed nanoparticles using soap-free emulsion polymerization with sodium p-styrene sulfonate as ionic comonomer was achieved. The experimental results showed that the particle number increased with NaSS concentration, reaching a maximum at 10 wt% NaSS concentration, resulting in the smallest particle size nanoparticles. Furthermore, the particle size distribution gradually narrowed during the polymerization reaction.

Summary: A sequential flow process was developed for the production of monodisperse PMMA/PS composite particles through soap-free emulsion polymerization of MMA and St using water-in-oil slug flows. Comparing with batch processes, slug flow reactions showed enhanced mass transfer efficiency, resulting in high-quality composite particles in a short reaction time.
