Carbon K-edge x-ray emission spectroscopy of gas phase ethylenic molecules

R. A. Ingle et al.

Summary: This article reports on the C K-edge X-ray absorption spectra and resonant and non-resonant X-ray emission spectra of ethylene, allene, and butadiene in the gas phase. The results show clear differences between the spectra of different molecules, with more structured spectra observed for ethylene and allene compared to butadiene. The authors used density functional theory calculations to simulate the spectra and successfully identified the spectral features as transitions involving localized 1s orbitals. The implications of these findings for ultrafast X-ray studies of polyatomic molecules passing through conical intersections are discussed.

Using core-hole reference states for calculating X-ray photoelectron and emission spectra

Summary: For the calculation of core-ionization energies, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and X-ray emission spectra, using non-Aufbau reference states may introduce numerical instabilities. Freezing high-energy virtual orbitals can stabilize the calculation and produce reliable spectra.

XABOOM: An X-ray Absorption Benchmark of Organic Molecules Based on Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen 1s → π* Transitions

Thomas Fransson et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of several standard and popular approaches for calculating X-ray absorption spectra for organic molecules, focusing on the precision of transition energies and intensities rather than accuracy. The use of exchange-correlation functionals tailored for time-dependent DFT calculations showed similar error spreads to more standard functionals while yielding superior absolute energies. Long-range corrected functionals performed particularly well, with error spreads in energy and intensity close to 0.2-0.3 eV and 10%, respectively.

Modeling of the spectroscopy of core electrons with density functional theory

Nicholas A. Besley

Summary: The availability of X-ray light sources with increased resolution and intensity has provided a foundation for increasingly sophisticated experimental studies exploiting the spectroscopy of core electrons to probe fundamental chemical, physical, and biological processes. Quantum chemical calculations, particularly density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), play a critical role in the analysis of experimental measurements. Current developments in applying DFT and TDDFT to study key X-ray spectroscopy techniques are presented, along with insights into the achievable accuracy and challenges in modeling core electron spectroscopy with DFT.
