Cerebrospinal fluid egress to human parasagittal dura and the impact of sleep deprivation

Per Kristian Eide et al.

Summary: Evidence suggests that the glymphatic system and meningeal lymphatic vessels play a crucial role in clearing toxic metabolites from the brain. The efficiency of glymphatic circulation and meningeal lymphatic clearance may vary during sleep and wake states. However, sleep deprivation did not alter the molecular clearance from parasagittal dura in this study. Further research is needed to determine the impact of sleep on molecular clearance in humans.

Sleep deprivation impairs molecular clearance from the human brain

Per Kristian Eide et al.

Summary: The study found that one night of total sleep deprivation impairs molecular clearance from the human brain, and subsequent sleep does not compensate for this impairment.

Tau and β-Amyloid Burden Predict Actigraphy-Measured and Self-Reported Impairment and Misperception of Human Sleep

Joseph R. Winer et al.

Summary: This study found that early-stage tau and Aβ deposition in Alzheimer's disease can impact sleep, with tau burden leading to worse objective sleep and Aβ burden associated with decreased self-reported sleep quality. Aβ deposition also predicts a mismatch between objective and subjective sleep evaluation, with individuals underestimating their sleep, which is further linked to worse executive function.

Impaired glymphatic function in idiopathic intracranial hypertension

Per Kristian Eide et al.

Summary: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension is a brain disease with unknown cause, characterized by cerebrospinal fluid disturbance, increased intracranial pressure, and visual failure. This study found impaired glymphatic function in several brain regions of patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension, leading to altered tracer distribution and delayed clearance in grey and white matter. Further research is needed to investigate the implications of glymphatic failure in the progression of idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
