Ice2 promotes ER membrane biogenesis in yeast by inhibiting the conserved lipin phosphatase complex

Dimitrios Papagiannidis et al.

Summary: Cells dynamically adjust organelle size to meet physiological demand, with organelle growth requiring coordination with lipid metabolism. The ER transmembrane protein Ice2 plays a key role in promoting ER membrane biogenesis by inhibiting the dephosphorylation and activation of Pah1, a key enzyme in lipid metabolism. Ice2 cooperates with the transcriptional regulation of lipid synthesis genes to maintain cell homeostasis during ER stress, highlighting the importance of controlling the lipin phosphatase complex in regulating ER membrane biogenesis.

Differential activation mechanisms of two isoforms of Gcr1 transcription factor generated from spliced and un-spliced transcripts in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Seungwoo Cha et al.

Summary: Gcr1, an important transcription factor for glycolytic genes in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, was recently found to have two isoforms, Gcr1(U) and Gcr1(S), produced from un-spliced and spliced transcripts. Gcr1(U) forms an active complex with Gcr2 homodimer, whereas Gcr1(S) acts as a homodimer without Gcr2.

Summary: This study found that expressing the OVCA2 gene in yeast induces apoptotic cell death, and complementing OVCA2 in fsh3 Delta cells slows cell growth and increases apoptotic phenotypes.

Suboptimal Global Transcrintional Response Increases the Harmful Effects of Loss-of-Function Mutations

Karoly Kovacs et al.

Summary: The rewiring of the transcriptome upon gene inactivation is often nonspecific and mimics stereotypic responses to external environmental changes. Most transcriptomic changes after gene deletion are not specific to the deleted gene, but rather triggered by perturbations in functionally diverse genes. Additionally, gene deletions that alter the expression of dosage-sensitive genes can be particularly harmful.
