Defining the regenerative effects of native spider silk fibers on primary Schwann cells, sensory neurons, and nerve-associated fibroblasts

Flavia Millesi et al.

Summary: The study highlights the potential of native spider silk in promoting nerve regeneration, with insights needed on the in vivo regenerative properties of recombinant silk fibers. Results demonstrate that native spider silk supports attachment, proliferation, and characteristic behaviors of various cell types; axonal out-growth of DRG neurons occurs along SCs and SCs migrate along the silk fibers, achieving reported distance for regenerating axons.

In vitro extracellular matrix deposition by vascular smooth muscle cells grown in fi broin scaffolds, and the regulation of TGF- S 1

Guangzhou Song et al.

Summary: The study focused on in vitro matrix formation by culturing human aorta smooth muscle cells in a silk fibroin scaffold, investigating the deposition of extracellular matrix components and the regulatory effect of transforming growth factor S1. It was found that treatment with TGF-S1 improved cell survival and proliferation, as well as enhanced the synthesis of ECM proteins in the scaffolds.

Spidroin Silk Fibers with Bioactive Motifs of Extracellular Proteins for Neural Tissue Engineering

Veronica A. Revkova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of spidroin-based electrospun materials modified with ECM peptide motifs on the adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of neural precursor cells. The results demonstrate a potential shift toward neuroglial differentiation, with different ECM motifs promoting the formation of specific types of neurons. Additionally, the matrices preserve neuroglial progenitor cells similar to radial glia, suggesting the potential for creating an in vitro model for the neuroglial stem cell niche.
