Spatial patterns and conservation of genetic and phylogenetic diversity of wildlife in China

Yibo Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic and phylogenetic diversity of Chinese terrestrial vertebrates, revealing higher diversity in South China and Southwest China. Climatic factors had a positive effect on genetic diversity levels, while altitude and human population density had a negative impact. The findings will inform national-level genetic diversity conservation plans and post-2020 biodiversity conservation framework.

Elevation and body size drive convergent variation in thermo-insulative feather structure of Himalayan birds

Sahas Barve et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that as elevation increases, the proportion of the feather's downy section also increases. Additionally, body size has a predictable effect on thermo-insulative feather traits, with smaller birds having longer feathers for better insulation. This suggests that the increase in downy section in feathers in colder temperatures is a common response among temperate and tropical species, and smaller-bodied birds tend to have longer and more insulative feathers.

Geological and climatic histories likely shaped the origins of terrestrial vertebrates endemic to the Tibetan Plateau

Jiekun He et al.

Summary: The study reveals that endemic species started to colonize the TP as early as 55 million years ago, with the main colonization phase increasing around 15 million years ago and peaking after 6 million years. The major source areas for endemic TP species include the Hengduan Mountains, the Himalayas, and Central Asia. Elevation difference has the strongest effect on the source areas, followed by geographical distance. Significant differences were found among vertebrate classes in terms of spatio-temporal origins and potential drivers of endemic TP species.

Evolutionary assembly of flowering plants into sky islands

Hong Qian et al.

Summary: The study found that each of the alpine floras worldwide represents an assemblage of more closely related species compared with their regional floras. Temperate alpine floras are phylogenetically closely related subsets of floras that colonized cold temperate areas during interglacial periods, while the phylogenetic clustering of species in tropical alpine floras exceeds that in temperate mountains.

Using the IUCN Red List to map threats to terrestrial vertebrates at global scale

Michael B. J. Harfoot et al.

Summary: The study used expert information from the IUCN Red List to generate global maps of the six major threats to terrestrial amphibians, birds, and mammals, showing that agriculture and logging are widespread in the tropics, and that hunting and trapping pose the most geographically widespread threat to mammals and birds. The study also highlights that current representations of human pressure on biodiversity underestimate the overall pressure, particularly in areas of high biodiversity importance.
