Mechanism and implications of upwelling from the Late Ordovician to early Silurian in the Yangtze region, South China

Shengchao Yang et al.

Summary: Studies have found widespread oceanic upwelling in the Yangtze region during the Late Ordovician to early Silurian transition, possibly driven by glacially-influenced temperature differences between the poles and equator and longshore trade winds. This upwelling event may have led to organic matter accumulation in South China and could be considered a geological indicator of Late Ordovician glaciation and the Boda warm Event prior to the Hirnantian cooling.

Onset of sedimentation near the Carnian/Norian boundary in the northwestern Sichuan Basin: New evidence from ammonoid biostratigraphy and zircon U-Pb geochronology

Paolo Mietto et al.

Summary: The Upper Triassic deposits in northwestern Sichuan were formed at the beginning of subsidence in the Sichuan foreland basin of South China, and may reflect a crisis of carbonate deposition linked to the Carnian Pluvial Episode. New ammonoid taxa and improved biostratigraphy, combined with U/Pb concordant ages, provide a robust constraint on the initial sedimentation phases and suggest that the terrigenous turnover was not related to the Carnian Pluvial Episode.

Tectonic evolution of the Sichuan Basin, Southwest China

Summary: Surface deformation in the Sichuan basin is influenced by two weak extension and compression episodes, leading to the formation of specific structures. The evolution of the basin appears to be controlled by deformation from its peripheral orogens rather than deep lithospheric and mantle processes.

North Atlantic marine biogenic silica accumulation through the early to middle Paleogene: implications for ocean circulation and silicate weathering feedback

Jakub Witkowski et al.

Summary: The Paleogene history of biogenic opal accumulation in the North Atlantic reveals insights into deepwater circulation and weathering responses; fluctuations in bioSiO2 fluxes at Blake Nose are linked to cyclonic eddies associated with the Gulf Stream; changes in biogenic silica burial in the Pacific and North Atlantic indicate varying nutrient supplies and productivity responses to overturning circulation and climate shifts.
