Optimizing microstructure, shrinkage defects and mechanical performance of ZL205A alloys via coupling travelling magnetic fields with unidirectional solidification

Lei Luo et al.

Summary: By coupling travelling magnetic fields (TMF) with unidirectional solidification, it is possible to optimize the microstructure of ZL205A alloys at different stages of the solidification process, leading to improvements in mechanical properties. The use of downward TMF with unidirectional solidification can refine and uniform the microstructure, decrease formation of precipitation, and increase ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, and hardness. However, upward TMF can have negative effects on the microstructure and overall performance of the alloys.

Hybrid reinforced aluminum matrix composites fabricated by selective laser melting

Hailong Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, near full density and crack-free hybrid aluminum matrix composites (HAMCs) reinforced with Cr3C2 ceramic particles and Ni-Cr trace elements were successfully fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM). The incorporation of trace elements Ni and Cr led to the formation of various intermetallic compounds, providing significant precipitation strengthening effect. The load transfer from matrix to the reinforcing particles and the formation of acicular Al4C3 at the interface between Cr3C2 and the matrix played important roles in strengthening the metal matrix composites. The HAMCs exhibited a 32% increase in microhardness and a 22% increase in compressive strength, but a significant reduction (26%) in tensile properties due to the sensitivity of the ceramic particle cracks to tensile stress.

Simultaneously improving strength and ductility of hybrid Al-Si matrix composite with polyphasic and multi-scale ceramic particles

Binghao Han et al.

Summary: Hybrid aluminum matrix composites containing polyphasic and multi-scale reinforcement particles were prepared by powder metallurgy and meltspinning method, which significantly improved the mechanical properties of Al-12Si alloy, including tensile strength, ductility, and hardness. The excellent mechanical properties were attributed to micron-sized VSi2 particles, nano-sized AlN, VB2, Al4C3, as well as well-bonded particle/matrix interface. Multiple strengthening mechanisms, such as Orowan strengthening, CTE mismatch strengthening, and Hall-Petch effect, contributed to the enhancement of mechanical properties.
