Deformation behavior of HfNbTaTiZr high entropy alloy singe crystals and polycrystals

Hiroyuki Y. Yasuda et al.

Summary: The deformation behavior of equiatomic HfNbTaTiZr high entropy alloy was found to be influenced by 1/2<111> screw dislocations, similar to body centered cubic metals. An anomaly in yield stress was observed in the alloy solutionized at 1473 K, with the stress decreasing rapidly at lower temperatures and increasing at 873 K. The microstructure of the alloy strongly depended on annealing temperature, with phase separation and precipitation of different phases observed at different temperatures. Dynamic precipitation of the HCP phase was suggested to be responsible for the yield stress anomaly.

A mechanistic perspective on the kinetics of plastic deformation in FCC High Entropy Alloys: Effect of strain, strain rate and temperature

Abheepsit Raturi et al.

Summary: The plastic deformation behavior of novel high entropy alloys is determined by the strain rate sensitivity, activation volume, and strain hardening response. Further research is needed to establish theoretical understanding of solid solution strengthening and dislocation activation in 100 percent solute high entropy alloys, and to develop combined experimental and computational approaches for the mechanistic design of new FCC HEAs.

Effects of microstructure and temperature on the mechanical properties of nanocrystalline CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy under nanoscratching using molecular dynamics simulation

Yuming Qi et al.

Summary: This study employed molecular dynamics to investigate the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of nanocrystalline high-entropy alloy under nanoscratching load, revealing the effects of crystal structure, temperature, grain size, and twin boundary spacing on deformation mechanisms and microstructure evolution. Findings include different indentation force behaviors in single-crystal, nanotwin polycrystalline, and polycrystalline structures, as well as observations of amorphization, inverse Hall-Petch relation, and twin boundary migration during nanoindentation. Additionally, dislocation locks, secondary twins, and phase transformations were also observed in simulations.

Predicting core structure variations and spontaneous partial kink formation for 1/2 <111> screw dislocations in three BCC NbTiZr alloys

B. Akdim et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that chemically-complex solid-solution alloys produce equilibrium dislocations at high temperatures, leading to kinks and pinning points that significantly increase strength. Atomistic studies and chemical analysis can help understand the effects of different alloy compositions on dislocation formation.
