Bending compensated surface mechanical grinding treatment overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off in thin copper sheet

Kai Han et al.

Summary: A new deformation technique called bending compensated surface mechanical grinding treatment (BC-SMGT) was proposed to create gradient nanostructured layers on thin metallic sheets. Samples processed with this technique at cryogenic temperature exhibited better strength-ductility synergy due to a thicker deformation layer and smaller surface grain size.

Significant Bauschinger effect and back stress strengthening in an ultrafine grained pure aluminum fabricated by severe plastic deformation process

Si Gao et al.

Summary: For the first time, a Bauschinger test in uniaxial tension-compression mode was conducted on pure Al specimens with homogeneous ultra-fine grained (UFG) microstructures fabricated by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) and subsequent annealing processes. The study found significant Bauschinger stress and Bauschinger energy parameter in the UFG specimens, which had strong dependencies on the tensile plastic pre-strain at the early stage of deformation, contrasting with their coarse-grained (CG) counterpart. The grain size dependence of the Bauschinger effect in pure Al was qualitatively discussed.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the role of Zn content in Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys and found that increasing Zn content promotes the formation of precipitates and enhances aging hardening. By combining multiple experiments and an integrated internal state-variable model, an improved physical model for the aging responses of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys was developed.

Summary: This study experimentally analyzed the mechanical properties of 7075-T6 aluminum reinforced with SiC particles of different sizes. Results showed that adding particles can increase ultimate tensile strength, but decrease elongation compared to pure 7075 aluminum. Additionally, nanoparticles had a greater effect on tensile strength than submicron and micron particles.

Strengthening of aluminium alloy 7005 through imposition of severe plastic deformation supplemented by different ageing treatments

R. Bakhshi et al.

Summary: The study shows that a superior strengthening effect is achieved through the imposition of severe plastic deformation supplemented by post-deformation natural ageing. The yield strength of the alloy increases to over 400 MPa, which is about one-third higher than the value obtained after the usual T6 treatment. This superior strength is mainly attributed to grain refinement, increased dislocation density, and an increased volume fraction of precipitates during natural ageing.
