Reducing the yield asymmetry in Mg-5Li-3Al-2Zn alloy by hot-extrusion and multi-pass rolling

Xiaoqiang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a Mg-5Li-3Al-2 Zn (LAZ532) alloy was successfully produced through hot-extrusion and multi-pass rolling, leading to grain refinement, improved mechanical properties, and reduced yield asymmetry. The presence of ultra-fine AlMg4Zn11 and nano Li3Al2 phases in the alloy was observed, contributing to the enhancement of comprehensive mechanical properties. Additionally, the combination of weak basal lamellar texture, grain refinement, and Li element addition effectively improved yield symmetry in the alloy.

Effect of rolling ratios on the microstructural evolution and corrosion performance of an as-rolled Mg-8 wt.%Li alloy

B. J. Wang et al.

Summary: The influence of rolling ratios on microstructural changes and corrosion behavior of an as-rolled Mg-8 wt.%Li alloy in 0.1 mol/L NaCl solution was investigated. It was found that as the rolling ratio increased, the alpha-Mg phases elongated and fragmented, leading to decreased corrosion performance. The corrosion process can be divided into two stages, with initial corrosion mainly occurring in beta-Li phases and later transferring to the alpha-Mg phases.

Hot tensile deformation behavior of extruded LAZ532 alloy with heterostructure

Xiaoqiang Li et al.

Summary: The hot tensile test was performed on an extruded Mg-5Li-3Al-2Zn (LAZ532) alloy with a heterostructure of fibrous extrusion zones (FEZs) and nonfibrous extrusion zones (non-FEZs) coexisted, showing that the alloy exhibited superplastic characteristics at lower strain rates or higher deformation temperatures. The microstructure analysis revealed different deformation behaviors between the FEZs and non-FEZs, with different mechanisms dominating during different stages of deformation. The activation energy was calculated to be around 110.0 kJ/mol, and the hot tensile deformation mechanism involved alternating and coordinated deformation among grain boundary slip, intragranular slip, and dynamic recrystallization (DRX).

Simultaneous achievement of high electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (X-band) and strength in Mg-Li-Zn-Gd/MWCNTs composite

Jiahao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a Mg-9Li-3Zn-0.5Gd/MWCNTs composite was prepared by a method combining heat treatment, electrophoretic deposition (EPD), and accumulative roll bonding (ARB). The uniformly distributed MWCNTs promoted the precipitation of ultrafine nano-scale W-phase, improving the electrical conductivity, strength, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of the composite material. The enhancement in properties of the composite material was mainly attributed to the dispersion of MWCNTs inducing the precipitation of ultrafine nano-scale W-phase particles.

Synergistically improved damping, elastic modulus and mechanical properties of rolled Mg-8Li-4Y-2Er-2Zn-0.6Zr alloy with twins and long-period stacking ordered phase

Dan Wang et al.

Summary: The Mg-8Li-4Y-2Er-2Zn-0.6Zr alloy exhibits high damping capacity, tensile strength and elastic modulus after heat treatment and cold rolling processes. The introduction of LPSO phase and formation of twins during cold rolling contribute to the improvement in damping capacity and tensile strength. The high elastic modulus of the cold-rolled alloy can be attributed to the effects of LPSO phase and cold rolling.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of adding rare earth elements to magnesium-lithium dual-phase alloys on the ductility size effect, finding that the elongation rate is more than two times higher than common magnesium alloys. The improvement in ductility is attributed to the size effect of the width of the β-lithium phase in the alloy, with a critical value within the range of 3-8 micrometers.

Micromechanical origin of the enhanced ductility in twinless duplex Mg-Li alloy

Di Xie et al.

Summary: Through real-time neutron diffraction measurements, it was found that the enhanced ductility of duplex Mg-Li alloys is attributed to the early yield of BCC beta-Li phase and the sequential activation of basal and pyramidal a slip systems in HCP alpha-Mg phase, which promotes overall work hardening rate and relieves Mises constraint for deformation compatibility. No obvious twinning activities were observed, resulting in symmetric hysteresis loops during a full loading cycle within +/- 1% applied strain.
