Relating Tmax and hydrogen index to vitrinite and solid bitumen reflectance in hydrous pyrolysis residues: Comparisons to natural thermal indices

Celeste D. Lohr et al.

Summary: Vitrinite reflectance is a reliable technique for determining thermal maturity in sedimentary rocks, but collecting reflectance measurements can be time-consuming and subjective. Programmed pyrolysis data such as T max and hydrogen index are more efficient to obtain and independent of operator bias. Relational equations derived from programmed pyrolysis data can effectively calculate reflectance values in naturally matured samples, with good consistency compared to measured values. However, factors such as variable organic matter composition and differences in maturation reaction kinetics may affect the accuracy of these equations.

Source rock maturity evaluation and its implications for regional petroleum charge, Sirt Basin, Libya: Insights from regional geochemical assessments and modelling study

Khaled Albriki et al.

Summary: A study on six marine and lacustrine source rocks in the Sirt Basin in Libya revealed different thermal maturity levels due to varying burial depths. The lower Cretaceous source rocks experienced higher degrees of organic matter diagenesis, while the Upper Cretaceous and late Palaeocene source rocks exhibited a wide range of thermal maturity levels.

METHODS TO ESTIMATE EROSION IN SEDIMENTARY BASINS

Karthik Iyer et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the impact of net erosion on hydrocarbon prospectivity and methods for determining net erosion. Discrepancies between datasets can be reconciled through critical examination, resulting in relatively consistent estimates of net erosion.

Ultimate expellable potentials of source rocks from selected super basins: What does world class look like?

Andrew Pepper et al.

Summary: The potential supply of petroleum charge is constrained by masses and volumes supplied by the source bed. Evaluating the ultimate expellable potential (UEP) of source rocks is crucial in resource estimation for plays or prospects, as it represents the cumulative masses of oil and gas that can be expelled upon complete maturation of the source rock. Different source rocks have varying UEP values that impact the evaluation of potential resources.

Examining the relationship between Tmax and vitrinite reflectance: An empirical comparison between thermal maturity indicators

Jonathan C. Evenick

Summary: Rock-eval pyrolysis data have been used for over 40 years to evaluate thermal maturity and source rock potential. A large dataset of 33,732 measurements from 903 publications was used to test the relationship between Tmax, HI, PI, and Ro, revealing a positive correlation between Tmax and Ro with considerable scatter. A new equation Ro = (0.013 x Tmax) - 5.0 was proposed with an R-2 value of 0.22, showing potential improvement over previous equations.
