Influence of Fly Ash and Emery based particulate reinforced AA7075 surface composite processed through friction stir processing

K. Suganeswaran et al.

Summary: The novel friction stir technology is adopted in modern automotive industries to enhance the properties of AA7075 surface composites. The addition of fly ash and emery particles improves hardness, impact toughness and tribological behavior. The composites show a fine and homogenous distribution of reinforcements, and good interface between the reinforcement particulates and base substrate. The hybrid composite specimen 50E50FA exhibits superior hardness, reduced grain size, increased crack propagation resistance, and decreased wear rate.

Consequence of reinforced SiC particles on microstructural and mechanical properties of AA6061 surface composites by multi-pass FSP

Husain Mehdi et al.

Summary: Multi-pass friction stir processing was applied to AA6061 to reinforce SiC nanoparticles, resulting in uniform distribution of SiC particles after the sixth pass. With an increase in the number of FSP passes, agglomeration of SiC particles decreased, while material mixing and dispersion improved, leading to progressive fragmentation of SiC particles.

Effects of tool pin profile and feed rate on wear performance of pine leaf ash/Al composite prepared by friction stir processing

Manoj Kumar Gupta

Summary: The surface composite of aluminum alloy reinforced with Pine Leaf Ash was developed using friction stir process with varying tool feed rate. The composite fabricated with threaded taper pin tool at 56 mm/min feed rate exhibited the highest hardness and lowest wear rate. The hardness and wear properties of composite fabricated with threaded pin tool showed significant improvements of 15.81% and 18.13% respectively.

Influence of secondary phase particles Al2O3/SiC on the microstructure and tribological characteristics of AA7075-based surface hybrid composites tailored using friction stir processing

K. Suganeswaran et al.

Summary: This study focused on providing an alternative material for cylinder liners of automotive and aircraft engines, by utilizing friction stir processing on AA7075 with different weight ratios of Al(2)O(3) and SiC reinforcements. The addition of 3.7 wt.% Al2O3 + 3.0 wt.% SiC in AA7075 enhanced the microhardness about 33.96% higher than the base matrix, leading to improved wear resistance. The dry sliding wear behavior analysis showed that increasing the weight percentage of Al(2)O(3) particles enhanced the wear resistance of AA7075 surface hybrid composites, particularly at higher loads, due to the formation of protective tribofilm.

Mechanical and wear performance of Al/SiC surface composite prepared through friction stir processing

Ravi Butola et al.

Summary: The present study focused on fabricating silicon carbide particle reinforced AA7075 composites using Friction Stir Processing (FSP) and analyzing the impact of processing, particle addition, and tool rotational speed on mechanical and wear properties. Results indicated that reinforcement addition improved microhardness and wear resistance but led to decreased ductility and tensile strength in the material. Tool rotational speed showed a direct relationship with the tested mechanical and wear properties, with adhesive wear being the prominent wear mechanism observed. These composites have potential applications in industries like automotive, defense, and aerospace.

Optimizing turning parameters in the machining of AM alloy using Taguchi methodology

Sunil Dutta et al.

Summary: Magnesium alloys are widely used in engineering sectors for their lightweight, stiffness, and damping properties. However, machining these alloys poses challenges due to their mechanical properties and inflammability. In this study, a newly developed Aluminum-Manganese (AM) series Mg alloy was subjected to turning operation, with control factors including feed, speed, and depth of cut. Statistical analysis revealed that depth of cut has the greatest impact on cutting force, while feed has the greatest influence on surface roughness.
