Predicting grain yield and protein content using canopy reflectance in maize grown under different water and nitrogen levels

Zhonglin Wang et al.

Summary: Predicting grain yield and protein content of maize using spectral reflectance data is crucial for improved agricultural production. This study developed a predictive approach based on canopy spectral reflectance measurements at different growth stages to establish models for estimating physiological parameters and ultimately grain yield and protein content. Results showed significant relationships between grain yield and protein content with physiological parameters, and models using vegetation indices and wavelet features were reliable for prediction of grain yield and protein content under various water and nitrogen availability conditions.

Green LAI Mapping and Cloud Gap-Filling Using Gaussian Process Regression in Google Earth Engine

Luca Pipia et al.

Summary: Gaussian process regression (GPR) has shown to be a competitive machine learning regression algorithm for Earth observation, with unique properties such as filling gaps in optical imagery and generating cloud-free products. By integrating GPR into the Google Earth Engine (GEE), large-scale processing of satellite data and generation of vegetation products can be achieved.

A Survey of Active Learning for Quantifying Vegetation Traits from Terrestrial Earth Observation Data

Katja Berger et al.

Summary: The current increase in spatiotemporally explicit data streams from satellite-based Earth observation missions provides opportunities for global vegetation monitoring. Active learning heuristics offer a pathway for fast inference of vegetation variables using hybrid retrieval approaches. Studies have shown that optimized AL training data sets outperform models trained on randomly sampled data sets, with Euclidean distance-based diversity method being the most efficient AL technique. This approach can improve regression accuracy, speed up processing time, and reduce model size for machine learning algorithms.

Hyperspectral imagery to monitor crop nutrient status within and across growing seasons

Nanfeng Liu et al.

Summary: Imaging spectroscopy is a valuable tool for monitoring nutrient status and predicting yield of potatoes across cultivars, growth stages, and growing seasons. Ordinary least-squares regression models showed poor predictions, while partial least-squares regression models performed well using different spectral regions. Cross-season models exhibited some bias and require further optimization.

Summary: The PRISMA satellite mission, launched in March 2019, is a cutting-edge imaging spectroscopy mission for Earth Observation. The mission conducted field and airborne campaigns in an agriculture area in Italy to assess instrument performance and data product consistency. The results show that the PRISMA satellite images are suitable for further scientific applications, but further studies are needed to confirm performance in other land cover types.

Crop Nitrogen Retrieval Methods for Simulated Sentinel-2 Data Using In-Field Spectrometer Data

Gregor Perich et al.

Summary: Nitrogen is a key nutrient in agricultural production globally, but over-fertilization can have negative impacts. Remote sensing of plant nitrogen using satellite data is important for monitoring nitrogen flows in agro-ecosystems. Different prediction methods were evaluated in this study, with random forest regression and Gaussian processes regression outperforming normalized ratio indices. Key spectral bands for estimating plant nitrogen concentration were identified, highlighting the importance of the short-wave infrared region.
