Crystallisation studies of sodium acetate trihydrate - suppression of incongruent melting and sub-cooling to produce a reliable, high-performance phase-change material

David E. Oliver et al.

Summary: This study has identified two polymer additives that can prevent incongruent melting of sodium acetate trihydrate (SAT) over multiple temperature cycles. The polymers act as crystal-habit modifiers, altering the morphology of anhydrous sodium acetate and suppressing its precipitation. In situ experiments show that the active nucleator for SAT is Na-2-HPO4·2H(2)O, and dehydration leads to the activation of anhydrous Na2HPO4. New formulations of SAT have been developed for consistent and reliable performance in heat-storage applications.
